L is for Lestrade, drawing by Amy Crook

L is for Lestrade by Amy Crook

Happy Friday the 13th! I bring you a fourth adorably morbid installment in my Baker Street Tinies Edward Gorey/Sherlock pastiche commissions. Lestrade is taken directly from H is for Hector in the original book, though Hector wasn’t texting at the time of his untimely demise.

I highly recommend clicking to see the image larger, if only so you can appreciate my absurdly painstaking work. The original is sold, but there are cards (and soon prints) available in my Etsy shop.

L is for Lestrade, 8.5″x5.5″ pen and ink on paper, sold.

M is for Mycroft

M is for Mycroft by Amy Crook

The wonderful person who bought my other two Baker Street Tinies Edward Gorey/Sherlock pastiche pieces decided her collection wasn’t complete without Mycroft Holmes and DI Lestrade in the mix. This is the first of two more images she’s commissioned to match the first two, with yet more painstaking crosshatching. Mycroft takes directly after E is for Ernest in the original books, though the bell has become a Blackberry, and his faithful umbrella snuck its way into the picture.

I highly recommend clicking to see the image larger, if only so you can appreciate my absurdly painstaking work. Once Lestrade is done, I’ll have cards and prints available in my Etsy shop.

Baker Street Domesticity

Baker Street Domesticity, cartoon by Amy Crook

Baker Street Domesticity by Amy Crook

Another little commission, this time for someone who really enjoyed my 6-page comic, Resplendent Ennui. She wanted a domestic scene with John poking out his tongue while he ate crisps, and I couldn’t resist adding in some extra details. Sherlock likes his tea light and sweet, so he’s got an Erlenmeyer flask of milk and a tipped-over beaker of sugar to go with his tea. John’s drinking his black out of his RAMC mug — I’m pretty sure Sherlock is “borrowing” Mrs. Hudson’s teacup and pot there.

Kitties Visit Baker St.

Kitties Visit Baker St. cartoon by Amy Crook

Kitties Visit Baker St. cartoon by Amy Crook

This little commission was done for a request of John & Sherlock playing with my kitties, so Belladonna (left) and Pteropodidae (right) go to take a little trip to Baker Street. Bella’s fully recovered from her tooth drama, and has found John a comfy, warm place to look annoyed about being petted. Sherlock has, predictably, decided to experiment with Pod and a laser pointer (he also refuses to call Pod by anything other than his full name).

All in all it was fun do draw cartoon versions of my kitties, and of course I always enjoy John & Sherlock.

Kitties Visit Baker St., 7″x5″ pen and ink on paper, not for sale, commission.

Crayon Duckies, commissioned art by Amy Crook

Crayon Duckies by Amy Crook, commission

They’re not quite weebles, but every once in a while I get to do something so awesome for a client I can’t help but share. These were drawn with actual crayons for a client’s promotion involving dressed-up Halloween rubber duckies. Illustration clients ftw!

Snape – Don’t Look Back Moleskine

Snape - Don't Look Back customized Moleskine by Amy Crook

Snape - Don't Look Back customized Moleskine by Amy Crook

The winner of my $101 gift certificate chose a tiny painting for her prize, and with her leftover credit she got this customized Moleskine notebook. She wanted a Harry Potter parody of the famous Bob Dylan movie poster for Don’t Look Back, so I got out the Sharpies and got to work. I admit I have no idea what the movie’s about, but the concept seemed to fit poor Severus!

Commission: Ms D

Ms D for Angel Sullivan, by Amy Crook

Ms D for Angel Sullivan, by Amy Crook

A triumph of Twitter! The wonderful Angel Sullivan tweeted asking if there was someone who could draw her fairy for her for a reasonable fee, and a few tweets and emails later, Ms D was underway. She wanted the dragonfly wings to have a “soap-bubble quality” to them, so instead of my usual Copic markers I got out the watercolors and mixed up some very pale purple, blue and green to go over the waterproof Micron lines.

Ms D, 5″x5″ pen and ink and watercolor on paper, not for sale.

I asked Angel to write a little bit about her experience working with me as her illustrator, and this is what she had to say:

Working with Amy was easy beyond my hopes.

I was, initially, a little bit worried about trying to convey the look that I wanted for the fabulous Ms D & having it translated to the page in the way I’d really hoped for. Turns out, there was no need to be concerned. Amy was totally open to the few changes that I wanted along the way (because it was so close to just right the first time, yay!) & Ms D came out incredibly well. Amy kept to the initial timeline that we’d gone over and remained in touch with me through the process… I’m so thrilled and grateful for the way it all worked & look forward to working with Amy again in the future!!!

-Angel Sullivan

Ms D is reserved solely for Angel’s use, but if you click on her you can see the detail in her wings much more closely.
