Rude Goblins (with tiny wangs), sketch by Amy Crook

Rude Goblins, sketch by Amy Crook

I’m not sure what I had in mind when I sat down and started sketching, but I’ve managed to really amuse myself with these two guys. The very first line I drew was the round, fat curve of the short one’s pot belly, and I spent a ridiculous amount of time refining them before I decided it was time to declare them done.

And no, I have no idea what happened to their pants. And they’re not going to tell you, either.

Church of the Mind

Church of the Mind by Amy Crook

Church of the Mind by Amy Crook

When I originally drew this, I had considered coloring the stained glass window, but I found the image so striking in black and white I left it.

A few astute people among you might recognize the model as one I’ve used a few times before, though the stark chiaroscuro led to his face being obscured. If you click to see the larger view, you can just make out the subtle skull shadowing the figure’s face.

There’s some sort of statement in the juxtaposition of images, but I’ll leave it up to you to decide what.

Church of the Mind, 12″x18″ brush and ink on paper, $599 with free shipping.

This image is on paper, and will require matting or framing to be suitable for display; I’m happy to frame it for you for a small additional fee.

Animal Instincts

Animal Instincts by Amy Crook

Animal Instincts by Amy Crook

Photo etching is an interesting process where you start with a photograph, have film negatives made, and then use that to control exposure of a light-sensitive material to, well, light. Then it’s done like normal etching, except the parts where the light hit are more solid, so they don’t dissolve, and you’re left with the positive image eaten away, all ready to take ink.

My model at the time asked to have his back painted to try out his idea for a tiger stripes tattoo, so I got ink and a sumi-e brush and painted him up and took photos. I’ve had a chance to use those images for several things, including this piece.

Animal Instincts, 3″x3″ photo etching, $199 with free shipping.

This was printed in an edition of 26, of which I still have 4 + 1 with tea stains (oops).

These prints are on thick watercolor paper, but aren’t really suitable for display as is. I’m happy to frame it for you for a wee extra fee, though.

Toby by Amy Crook

Toby by Amy Crook

Back before I ever did a NaNoWriMo, I briefly considered doing a webcomic — the intensive schedule forces one to really develop a style and refine it quickly, which sounded more appealing than slogging through years more of feeling like an incompetent. In the long run, though, I decided that I just didn’t have the motivation to keep up a comic schedule, shelved the idea and turned it into my very first NaNoWriMo win.

This is Toby, one of the two main characters from Makeshift. It’s one of the first things I ever did using Copic markers, which then languished on my shelf for a long time before I picked them back up and got busy learning the long, hard way to suck less.

Toby, 5″x7″ pen & ink and Copic markers on sketchbook paper, not for sale.

Bound Angel 2 by Amy Crook

Bound Angel 2 by Amy Crook

This is the second version of yesterday’s drawing, this time a stone lithograph. The process involved in this one gave it a more scribbly feel, and the haloing effect washed out the face, and obscured the arms in stark black shadow.

The feel of this image is different than the first version for me, despite being essentially the same thing. It’s rougher, more abstract, as though the angel has begun to fade into his component parts, the whiteout glow of his halo making the shadows deeper and obscuring detail where it’s the brightest.

I ran 6 of these before clearing the stone for other use, on a heavy grey acid-free art paper. The edges of each one are hand-torn so they’re all slightly irregular, and there’s inky fingerprints around the borders of each one as a testament to their handmade nature.

Bound Angel 2, 14″x7″ stone lithograph on art paper, edition of 6, $99 each with free shipping.

Bound Angel 1

Bound Angel 1 by Amy Crook

Bound Angel 1 by Amy Crook

This pencil drawing was the first of 2 images, the second of which is a stone lithograph I’ll post tomorrow. His bindings are invisible, but you can see how his posture hangs as if in chains, face downturned as if contemplating the sin that brought him to this pass.

I’ve always had a fascination with religious imagery, the history and faith that are imbued into these images, the layered ideals and disappointments that each person brings to the viewing. Even if the image is purely representational, every viewer has layers of mental baggage to add to it that makes the piece a unique experience for them.

The graphite goes all the way to the edges of this acid-free bristol board; the black border you can see here is the scanner background. The board is heavy enough to stand on its own in a bookshelf or on a tiny easel, or the image could easily be framed for display.

Bound Angel 1, 6.5″x5″ graphite on bristol board, $99 with free shipping.

Missionary, view 1, by Amy Crook

Missionary, view 1, by Amy Crook

This is the last of the bronze couples I have, though there’s one more single figure saved to finish up the series.

This couple has a contrasting patina, the woman in soft greens and the man in rich mahogany browns, giving them a rather biracial feel. They’re resting on a soft peach pillow in the classic missionary position. Interestingly, if you flip them over the woman’s pose goes from abandon with her outflung arm, to anger as it’s raised overhead as if to strike.

Like all the couples, the two figures fit together and come apart, adding a tactile dimension to the art. Also, they’re just kinda fun to play with.

Missionary, bronze sculpture with fringed pillow, $1399 with free shipping.
