No No No Monsters by Amy Crook, $250
After sharing Wednesday’s Miasma of Monsters with my friends at the Starship, we all agreed that this trio was a big one for anyone running an ittybiz. First the raggedy, staticky fluffball of “No Energy,” then the red-eyed “No Time and their green friend with his unexpected sharp bits, “No Money.” Definitely a trio that demands attention!
I’m feeling a bit less poorly, myself, but still moving quite slowly when it comes to getting art done and ready to go, so you can expect updates to be a bit erratic until I’m all better. I’m just grateful for Tylenol.
No No No Monsters, 7″x5″ pen & ink and watercolor on paper, $250 with free shipping.

No No No Monsters, detail, by Amy Crook
Above you can see the red glaring clock of the time monster, telling you to stop or go faster, or possibly both. Below you can see them in a frame, looking just as silly as ever.

Miasma of Monsters

Miasma of Monsters by Amy Crook, $250
I swear, whenever I get sicky or ouchie my mood goes down with my physical wellness and I just feel uncreative and awful. Like my immune system is somehow responsible for keeping these critters at bay as well as the microscopic sort. I called this a miasma because that’s what their little cloud of doubt and blah reminded me of, a miasma that fills the mental air and makes it hard to see anything else.
My favorite is the guy in back, who is staring and not saying anything. You know what you did, his magenta evil eye says it all for him, though I’m fond of them all for one reason or another. The guy on the right looks like he’s about to erupt into a temper tantrum worthy of a 3-year-old, where the one on the left is very sternly lecturing you. He uses big words, I bet.
Painting them, I must admit, did help lift the miasma a bit. They’re just so cute!
Miasma of Monsters, 7″x5″ pen & ink and watercolor on paper, $250 with free shipping.

Miasma of Monsters, detail, by Amy Crook
Above, you can see my favorite monster staring at you. Always staring. Disapprovingly staring. Below, he’s still staring out of the frame, so you can see what these guys look like trapped behind glass.

Eihort

Eihort watercolor by Amy Crook, $199
Before painting this, I was mostly familiar with Eihort as a Great Old One from the board game Arkham Horror. Afterwards, I looked this horrific monster up and found that yep, it’s pretty awful. Eihort is from one of the later Mythos writers, Ramsey Campbell, and is basically a giant gelatinous mass with eyes that implants people with its brood, which will later hatch and kill them during the end times. Cheerful! But appropriate to the piece of art, I think, especially the part about eyes forming and unforming constantly in its shapeless body.
Eihort, 5″x5″ iridescent watercolor on paper, $199 with free shipping.

Eihort, detail 1, by Amy Crook
The two different paints used are both snazzy special effects paints that change color depending on the angle to the light, and together make the whole painting even more eerily otherwordly.

Eihort, detail 2, by Amy Crook
Above, you can see the green and orange mixing together in strange ways in Eihort’s gelatinous form. Below, it’s lurking in a frame, just waiting to offer you its hellish bargain of freedom for larvae.

Tentacle Deeps 48
Tuesday, April 30th, 2013

Tentacle Deeps 48 by Amy Crook, $199
It’s Tentacle Tuesday and this one’s an octopus! Appropriate for 48, I suppose, that I’d break the “odd numbers look better” rule and go for 8 sucker-laden arms waving in the murky water. The background is an odd duochrome paint that goes from rusty orange to a very bright green, the tentacles are a translucent dark purple, and the suckers are a gunmetal silver color called “iridescent moonstone.”
Tentacle Deeps 48, 4″x6″ watercolor on paper, $199 with free shipping.

Tentacle Deeps 48, detail, by Amy Crook
Above you can see the green shining up through the purple where it catches the light. Below, I’ve tucked it into a frame and let it hang out with my rather bored plushie — I think the orange one’s just jealous because it only has 5 arms.

Tentacle Spiral 5
Tuesday, April 23rd, 2013

Tentacle Spiral 5 by Amy Crook, $199
These tentacles are reaching out to you through an iridescent purple mist. I’m not sure what their plan is if they get a hold of you, but best make sure there’s a nice pane of glass on the frame, just in case.
Tentacle Spiral 5, 6″x4″ watercolor and salt water on paper, $199 with free shipping.

Tentacle Spiral 5, detail, by Amy Crook
Above, you can see the light changing the mist from lavender to shimmery blue. Below, you can see the tentacles in a frame, trying to get to my iPhone to make a call, presumably to Cthulhu.

Tentacle Deeps 47
Tuesday, April 9th, 2013

Tentacle Deeps 47 by Amy Crook, $299
The tentacles are back, and it’s even Tuesday! This piece started with the crosshatched background in black Sharpie marker, and then watercolor in layers on top of it. The tentacles themselves are thickly scribbled on, so the iridescent paint has a bit of texture to it where it floats atop the watery teal wash.
Tentacle Deeps 47, 8″x8″ watercolor and Sharpie marker on paper, $299 with free shipping.

Tentacle Deeps 47, detail, by Amy Crook
Above, you can see the sunlight reflecting purple off the iridescent tentacles, and the metallic golden bubbles floating serenely nearby. Below, you can see the piece in a frame on my wall, though without the helpful iPhone which for some reason doesn’t yet come with an anti-gravity feature.

Tentacle Idol
Tuesday, February 19th, 2013

Tentacle Idol by Amy Crook, $299
When I look at the final piece, I imagine some sort of dizzying bas relief in a hidden temple under the depths of the ocean or out of some horrific dreamland in one of HP Lovecraft’s tales. The sepia shadows and gold highlights give this art a steampunk air, but the way the art fades to a vortex of swirling madness is pure horror.
Tentacle Idol, 8″x8″ mixed media on paper, $299 with free shipping.

Tentacle Idol, detail, by Amy Crook
Above, you can see a close-up of some of the swirling tentacles, their gilt textured and worn, the spirals and suckers just uneven enough to be unsettling if you stare too long. Below, you can see a the art in a frame, up on one of my lovely wheat-gold walls.

Tentacle Idol, framed art by Amy Crook
And this time we have a bit of a bonus! This art started life as an experiment, layering sumi-e ink with Sharpie marker and gold paint and getting… mush. And so, I took photos from the point of mush to show how I nurtured it past the ass point and into a piece of art worth going on your wall.

Getting Past the Ass Point – with Tentacles!
