Not That Late, Really, Doctor Who fan art by Amy Crook, $69
Since I already had a few birthday cards for Doctor Who, I thought I’d go with Eleven’s seeming inability to do anything on time and do a belated one as well. I got the inks all done a couple of weeks ago, and then had to wait until my refill of TARDIS blue ink (I use a B18 Lazuli Copic marker for it) came in the mail. Those big blue boxes take a lot of coloring!
I find it rather fitting, anyway, that it took an extra week to get the art done, all things considered.

Above, you can see a close-up of the Doctor’s little sheepish face, along with his spiffy new jacket. Below, you can see him in a frame, peeking out of his TARDIS and up at you.

Harvest

Harvest by Amy Crook, $399
I did all of the inking for this in one very long afternoon, resulting in many aches & pains and a warm feeling of accomplishment. I left it for a few days, considering whether to watercolor in the moon and a bit of color on the figure, but in the end I decided I liked it best just as it is. I even did a little watercolor study on a bookmarklet to see how the paper took the paint.
I really like the contrasting textures in this, from the orderly crosshatching on the ground to the scribbled tree bark, the dense pattern of spirals in the sky and the pen shading on the figure suggesting rough cloth. And the dramatic air of mystery about it, who is the figure and is it even a person, hanging there backlit by the huge harvest moon.
Harvest, 6″x4″ pen & ink on paper, $399 with free shipping.

Above, you can see some of the different textures, along with a USB cable for size reference. I used my set of Micron pens to get a range of line widths, but even the thickest lines are quite fine. Below, you can see it in a small frame with my iPhone and the little color study, though I think if I was to frame it for permanent display I’d put it on a mat with photo corners so the edges of the image aren’t obscured by the frame.

Monster Naptime

Monster Naptime by Amy Crook, $250
After last week’s pair of Monster paintings, I decided to do a follow-up to start the week off right. This is, after all, the best perspective from which to deal with the adorable little pests. Once they’ve had a nap, I’m sure they won’t be quite so grumpy.
The clever among you will notice that it’s the artist holding the monsters. The persnickety will notice my part is on the wrong side, which is artistic license. And yes, I do have a nose in real life.

Above you can see the cranky cuties up close and full of meh. Below, I’ve put myself and my monsters behind glass, and Cthulhu himself came by to hang out. He’s got this sleeping thing down pat, after all.

Another Man’s Octopus

Another Man’s Octopus, a Sherlock Holmes comic by Amy Crook, $99
When I was contemplating ideas for today’s Tentacle Tuesday, this idea came to me (undoubtedly influenced by the steampunk novel I’m reading) to draw the original Holmes and Watson. I borrowed the fashions from one of the old Paget illustrations, so blame him for Holmes’ weird little jabot, and then added in our random steampunky science nerd and of course Biffy, the friendly octopus. He just really likes Watson’s moustache, I feel. It’s quite dashing.
I decided to shade it all in warm greys to give it the feel of an old Victorian daguerreotype or something, which always runs into the question of whether I should color the skin of the people or leave them white as the paper. I compromised by making Holmes very pale indeed, and giving Watson and the scientist a bit more robust warmth. This kind of coloring takes a bit less time than proper color, as the limited palette simplifies things.

Above, you can see the line that made me decide I absolutely had to draw the comic, along with an unimpressed Holmes uttering it. Below, they’ve made it into a frame with my bored 5-armed plushie and one of the original books.

Tea With Dori

Tea With Dori, fan art for The Hobbit by Amy Crook, $99
It’s another dwarf! Yes, I have every intention of drawing all 13 of them, eventually. Dori took approximately forever with his fancy hair and beard and all that, but I’m happy with the results. And of course, there’s a doily.

Eleven’s 1100

Eleven’s 1100, Doctor Who fan art by Amy Crook, $99
The Doctor is unimpressed with boring human age-related angst as well, because it’s a good time to be drawing birthday card art. He’s lived over 1100 years! He’s got his trusty TARDIS to keep him company, anyway, and a bowtie. Bowties are cool.
Eleven’s 1100, 5″x7″ pen & ink and Copic marker on paper, $99 with free shipping. He’s also available as a card in my Etsy shop.

Shoulder Devil

Shoulder Devil cartoon by Amy Crook, $99
Back when I did the Whispering Gremlin for Jo VanEvery, someone contacted me wanting to use it on their website. I couldn’t give them permission, of course, since it was commissioned for use in Jo’s work, but we discussed doing a shoulder devil for the person instead. I did a little sketch of the idea, wanting to draw a young, androgynous sort of figure, but the commission never materialized. I found the sketch in my stuff the other day and finished it up, so here it is for your enjoyment.

Shoulder Devil, detail, by Amy Crook
Above, you can see the way I used a thicker line on the “real” person, and a thinner pen to ink the wicked little devil whispering its discouraging, misguided words into the person’s ear. Below, you can see it in a frame, the devil reflected in my iPhone.
