Zombie Dad Plays Catch

Zombie Dad Plays Catch cartoon by Amy Crook

Zombie Dad Plays Catch cartoon by Amy Crook, $99

I didn’t manage anything specific for Mother’s Day this year, but I have two cards for geek dads on Father’s Day. The first one was my Harry Potter art from February, and now I’ve got zombies to round out the selection.

I made the zombie kid somewhat gender neutral, so anyone can feel good suggesting that their dad would still play catch with them even if they were both to become the brain-hungry undead. And if you use a head for catch, then it’s a game and a snack after!

Zombie Dad Plays Catch, 8″x5″ pen & ink and Copic markers on paper, $99 with free shipping.

The cards are available in my Etsy shop, of course, in plenty of time for Father’s Day!

Cartoon: Jocelyne Leach

Jocelyne Leach as a Cartoon by Amy Crook

Jocelyne Leach as a Cartoon by Amy Crook

I like to think Jocelyne’s cartoon really shows how far I’ve come with this style of art. She’s doing a simple yoga pose with the legs, has her logo on her tank top, and is toasting us with a tasty green smoothie in her left hand. I think this tall, skinny image is going to go in her sidebar to welcome guests to her website.

Here’s to you, Jocelyne, for being a great client!

If you’d like to Be a Cartoon yourself, just click here to see how! (Hint: there’s a button at the bottom of the page to buy.)

Grumpy Weeble for JoVE

Grumpy Weeble cartoon for Jo VanEvery, all rights reserved

Grumpy Weeble cartoon for Jo VanEvery, all rights reserved

The delightful Jo VanEvery wanted a cartoon — stat! — for a seminar she was doing. She wanted someone that looked a bit like one’s inner academic saying, “no!” to all the possibilities for one’s career and research. We decided on a weeble, and I sent her the colors you see above for a poster, and the inks (which I always scan before I color, in case of mishap), which they used for a coloring book page during the seminar.

She liked him so much, she’s getting a couple more, so expect to see a few more of her illustrations popping up in the coming weeks!

Mother Hydra

Mother Hydra cartoon by Amy Crook

Mother Hydra cartoon by Amy Crook, $69

I’ve taken some liberties here and used a more classic interpretation of a hydra, rather than the Lovecraftian description of Father Dagon’s bride. There’s just no way to make a vast pool of screaming faces cute, really.

As it is, I can totally imagine at least one of her heads yelling, “No more wire hangers!” She’s even got pearls and lovely pink-painted claws nails.

Just don’t mention the screaming faces and monstrous claws pressing against her heavy, pregnant belly. Or think about what sort of monsters she’s the mother of, if you want to sleep tonight.

Mother Hydra, 5″x7″ pen and ink and Copic markers on paper, $69 with free shipping.

Baby Squid

Baby Squid, cartoon art by Amy Crook

Baby Squid, cartoon art by Amy Crook, $77

Sometimes, I have to make art just so I can put it on a card in my Etsy shop, and this is one of those times. I’m trying to expand my offerings over there to something that isn’t quite so holiday-dependent. Thus we have a gender-free, geek-positive baby cards. I actually made two versions of this one: one is blank with just the image, and the other says, “Congratulations, it’s a…” on the front, and on the inside finishes with “Well, Congratulations, anyway.” Yes, I can even be sarcastic in the face of those giant soulful eyes.

I did have fun trying to make the cutest widdle squiddy you ever did see, though. The original would be awesome in a baby’s room somewhere, trying to out-cute the offspring.

Above I have him put into a frame so you can imagine how it would look, though this piece doesn’t ship framed unless you ask me to (and pay a little more). Below, you can see what he looks like on the snarky version of the card.

Potterly Love

Potterly Love, cartoon by Amy Crook

Potterly Love, cartoon by Amy Crook, $79

Is it James Potter and little Harry, or grown-up Harry and little James Sirius? In my mind it’s a little of both, James and Harry sharing a moment of fatherly love from one generation to the next. I even gave them Gryffindor-themed colors, with warm baby yellow and bright fatherly red.

I have to admit, my favorite part about drawing Harry Potter is the hair, which is always a fun, scribbly mess. Baby hair is just a little different, wispier and more staticky while being just as much of a mess as dad’s infamous mop.
