Seven for a Secret 2, spooky watercolor by Amy Crook

Seven for a Secret 2, 6″x6″ watercolor on Fluid watercolor paper

This moody series of Counting Crows paintings has its seventh addition!

The tree here has clearly been through quite a bit of storm-tossing or other rough handling, with broken branches and even the top pointing jaggedly to the sky while it spreads itself as well as it can with what remains. A murder of crows alights, and a ghostly figure awaits in the fog.

Where would you show this seventh secret?

Above, you can see a couple of the crows, a fraction of the full murder. Below, they’re in a frame like looking through a window into another, spookier reality.

The Autumn of Ashes

The Autumn of Ashes, ink art by Amy Crook

The Autumn of Ashes, 8″x4″ ink on Fluid watercolor paper

A ghostly apparition, white fog, and a leaf-crowned tree.

A bright pop of color slowly embraced by the fog, warm red-brown bark supporting the green and gold foliage of early fall. A cool grey figure that might be a spirit or might just be hidden by the mist.

What stories can you write for this image?

This is the perfect painting for someone with a head full of fairy tales who just needs a starting point to get their fingers moving.

Devil and Ghost, Inception parody art by Amy Crook

Devil and Ghost, 7″x5″ pen & ink and Copic marker on paper

Is this where I just admit I have sold a LOT of these chibi commissions lately? But they’re just so fun, I have no regrets.

color test ghostThese are for Halloween, of course! Arthur and Eames from Inception coming back again as the Devil and a ghost. Arthur is smarming it up in his red velvet suit, straightening his cuffs as he leans nonchalantly in wait. Eames is looking extra spiffy floating along in his vintage windowpane check.

And of course on the right I have the little sketch ghost I drew just to test Eames’ colors before the real thing. Boo!

These are drawn as close to a square aspect ratio as possible, so that they work as emoji on Slack. Their adorable 2-head-high chibi style conveys a lot of personality in a tiny space.

Weeping Willows

Monday, May 2nd, 2016

Weeping Willows watercolor by Amy Crook

Weeping Willows, 8″x4″ watercolor on Fluid watercolor paper

Are you weeping because it’s Monday? Me, too! Ah, well, the weekends can’t last forever.

Rain breaks up the blue of the sky, rivulets of white that weigh down the weeping willow trees below. The vault of the sky above presses downward, drawing the eye to the ground and the faded, ghostly figure walking among the branches.

The bare trees give a wintry feel to the scene, as does the cool turquoise blue of the sky, just barely desaturated by the gloom of the rainstorm.

Where in your life could you use a small reminder of the beauty in the death of the year?

Ghosts of Years Gone By

Ghosts of Years Gone By by Amy Crook

Ghosts of Years Gone By, 5″x7″ watercolor and duochrome watercolor on Arches cover buff paper

These ghosts are here to remind you of years gone by, of triumphs and tragedies lurking in your past. That one on the left seems particularly intent in communicating its message, so maybe check you’re not about to repeat some horrible mistake from your past? Or perhaps it’s trying to encourage you in its creepy, staring way.

Their eyes have an eerie blue-green glow to them, which pops out of the soft creamy paper and deep matte colors of paint. There’s beautiful granulation in that adds amazing texture and detail to their ghostly, half-real forms.

What ghosts are waiting in your past to show you the path forward?
