Not That Kind of Dwarf, parody comic by Amy Crook

Not That Kind of Dwarf, parody comic by Amy Crook

“Hi Ho, Hi Ho, to Erebor we go!”

“I’m not that kind of dwarf!”

The last of my friends’ silly sketch prompts, though I admit to taking liberties with the intent of “Thorin and his minions.” This is sort of a three-way crossover, with the Disney song sneaking in a third fandom. Because reasons.

You can get Thorin and his Minions on a card at my Etsy shop, to add a bit of surreal pop culture to the day of a very deserving friend.

Many Happy Returns

Many Happy Returns by Amy Crook

“A birthday is a delightful thing to have…
So I’ll wish you many happy returns of the day!”

After having my Grumpy Old Bilbo card in the shop for a while, I decided perhaps a Cheerful Young Bilbo card was in order, for contrast. Bilbo has a cheerful bright hobbit-sized birthday cake behind him, and the first of no doubt many kegs of ale, and he’s all dressed in his finery for a party.

If you’ve got a friend that loves The Hobbit but isn’t quite so grumpy as all that, you can wish them a happy birthday with this card.

Burglar, The Hobbit parody comic by Amy Crook

Burglar, The Hobbit parody comic by Amy Crook

Amidst the piles of shining gold, Bilbo Baggins is caught by the mighty red dragon, Smaug. But it’s not the Arkenstone that Smaug’s worried about — instead, he says, “Burglar, you’ve stolen my heart.” I suppose Bilbo should be glad he’s not lunch, though I’m not sure how he’s going to get out of this one.

Burglar, 7″x5″ pen & ink and Copic marker on paper. The original is sold, but you can get a card to send to your own heart-stealing hobbit here.

Hobbits Love Cherries

Hobbits Love Cherries, parody art by Amy Crook

“You’re as sweet as a bowl full of cherries!”
The Hobbit parody art by Amy Crook

Bilbo Baggins has a flower-petal bowl full of summer goodness — cherries are perfectly appropriate to Middle Earth New Zealand this time of year! He thinks you’re just as sweet as those luscious little fruits, and I’m inclined to agree.

He’s not for sale, though, so if you want to share his sentiment with someone you love, you’ll have to get him on a card in my Etsy shop.

Deck the Smaug, holiday fan art by Amy Crook

Deck the Smaug, holiday fan art by Amy Crook

I’m pretty sure this is the silliest holiday card I’ve ever designed, but I’m such a fan of the silly Smaug/Bilbo art out there on the internet, I had to toss in one of my own. Bilbo raided Smaug’s hoard for bells and gold chains, but I have no idea where he got the giant ribbons or pine boughs for the rest of his cheerful holiday decorating.

At least Smaug will smell delicious while he’s eating you!

Deck the Smaug, 7″x5″ pen & ink and Copic marker on paper. He is, of course, available as a card in my Etsy shop.

A Hobbity Birthday

Hobbit Birthday Traditions, parody art by Amy Crook

Hobbit Birthday Traditions, parody art by Amy Crook

Happy my-upcoming-Birthday to you! On Sunday I’ll be properly 40, and in grand hobbit tradition I have some little gifts for you.

  • If you get a set of Sherlock or Doctor Who bookmarks in September, you’ll get an extra bonus bookmark. Just don’t blink.
  • You can use this coupon code all through September to get 20% off anything in my Etsy shop: WHATDAYISIT
  • My novel will be free on Kindle from Sept. 20-22, approximately midnight to midnight Pacific, though their servers are sometimes a bit slow to update.
  • I’ll be offering something special to my Art Patron’s list as well, so keep an eye on your inbox!

Bilbo is of course available on a card, being his grumpy old self. I really enjoy antisocial old Bilbo Baggins and his dismissal of everyone else’s gossip about him. Though he still knows how to throw a party!

Flowers for Bilbo

Flowers for Bilbo, a Hobbit parody commission by Amy Crook

Flowers for Bilbo, a Hobbit parody commission by Amy Crook

“Tears, Gandalf. Tears and murder.”

Yes, this is related to a fic. No, I’m not going to tell you where to find it. Just be amused by poor Bilbo getting courting bouquets by two infamous dwarves, Dwalin and Thorin. Don’t worry, I’m sure it all turns out all right in the end, no murder required.

Above, you can see Bilbo’s worried expression and pink blush, and some of my carefully-researched flowers. I had to look up what most things actually looked like, though I did know how to draw Lily of the Valley already. Below, you can see it hanging out in a temporary frame, looking spiffy before it gets shipped off to its new home.
