Calligraphy Sketches

Wednesday, August 26th, 2015

I’ve been doing some calligraphy sketches on Instagram lately, and I thought I’d share them here for those of you that aren’t there. Some are little modern-day blessings, some are practice for larger future pieces, and one is a contemplation of purpose. Enjoy!

is your cuppa going cold?

Make what you have Do what you need.

May the thing that you're dreading turn out not to be so bad after all

to Create Beauty where none existed before

If you were a character in a story, you'd love you for all your quirks and flaws.

It’s an Advent Calendar, sort of!

Thursday, December 11th, 2014

I rather spontaneously decided to do an Advent Calendar this year on my Instagram account – I’ve been doing a little 10-minute sketch every day and posting a photo. I started with Sherlock and have been going through some of my fandoms, current and old, ever since!

On the first day of #Advent my artist gave to me, a #Sherlock making John a mug of tea #sketch

Instagram Food by Amy Crook, $79

Instagram Food by Amy Crook, $79

After I made my little Instagram Valentine, I wanted to make another card that had that same soft, abstract feeling and expressed a bit of what I love about the service. This time, though, I went for a more “missing you” approach, so instead of a person we get one of the other most-Instagrammed things — food! I painted it in warm yellows, oranges and browns with just a touch of green, to give the feeling of a filtered picture, and put it in a distressed photo “frame” as well.

Instagram Food, 5″x5″ pen & ink and Japanese Watercolor on paper, $79 with free shipping for the original.

The card says, “I like seeing your food on Instagram, but I’d rather see your face in person,” with the words framing the art.

Instagram Valentine watercolor by Amy Crook

“I’d Instagram you with no filter.”
Instagram Valentine watercolor by Amy Crook, $79

Despite their recent faux pas, I have to admit I really do enjoy the Instagram photo service. I made a Valentine for it this year, so I’m glad they backpedaled and agreed to make the language a little less awful in their new TOS. The image I painted is of a generic person icon, just a head and shoulders, done in warm terra cotta with a sepia background, on a distressed “photo.”
