Church of the Mind by Amy Crook
When I originally drew this, I had considered coloring the stained glass window, but I found the image so striking in black and white I left it.
A few astute people among you might recognize the model as one I’ve used a few times before, though the stark chiaroscuro led to his face being obscured. If you click to see the larger view, you can just make out the subtle skull shadowing the figure’s face.
There’s some sort of statement in the juxtaposition of images, but I’ll leave it up to you to decide what.

Unreal Angel

Unreal Angel by Amy Crook
I’ve had this painting for a while now, but I was never quite happy with certain details in it, so today when I was painting I pulled it out and mixed up a soft, warm gold and brought the too-subtle wings into fuller being. They’re still translucent and only half-realized at best, but much easier to see.
I also added a sort of secret detail; I got out my duochrome aquamarine and gave him a gently-blended halo that you can only see from some angles — in photos, it only showed up with the flash on:

Animal Instincts by Amy Crook
Photo etching is an interesting process where you start with a photograph, have film negatives made, and then use that to control exposure of a light-sensitive material to, well, light. Then it’s done like normal etching, except the parts where the light hit are more solid, so they don’t dissolve, and you’re left with the positive image eaten away, all ready to take ink.
My model at the time asked to have his back painted to try out his idea for a tiger stripes tattoo, so I got ink and a sumi-e brush and painted him up and took photos. I’ve had a chance to use those images for several things, including this piece.

This was printed in an edition of 26, of which I still have 4 + 1 with tea stains (oops).
These prints are on thick watercolor paper, but aren’t really suitable for display as is. I’m happy to frame it for you for a wee extra fee, though.

In the Forest of the Night by Amy Crook
This was an exercise in patience for me. Hours and hours spent with very sharp pencils putting the detail in one delicate stroke at a time, never too much at once. I love the texture it ended up with, especially the swirling background that seems to be nearly as mysterious as the tiger-striped man in the foreground. I especially love the way the young man seems to be emerging from, or being swallowed by, the dark background, the shadows an inherent part of his identity.
At one point in the life of this piece, someone set a glass of sticky white wine down on it — feeling of course that art on top of an antique desk would make a great coaster, I suppose. Another three hours went into the repairs, which are nearly invisible now, thank goodness. Homicide averted!

The Beating of Mighty Wings

From the Darkness, I Hear the Beating of Mighty Wings by Amy Crook, $199 lithograph
This piece was a two-part stone lithograph drawn by hand on two stones, which is a really interesting and odd process that I only got a chance to try out twice during the short time I had access to the materials.
The image on the left contains a quote from Neil Gaiman’s Sandman series about his character of Death, and that’s the quote which I used to title the whole piece. On the right, we have a quote from the Joy Division song “In a Lonely Place,” which was quoted in the original comics for The Crow — the second comic series I ever collected (the first was Bill Sienkiewicz’s Stray Toasters). The image, of course, is of the main character from the comic and later movie, and has a pattern of wings overlaying the shadows, a match to the outspread wing in the first panel.
There are a lot of hidden things here about death and myth and meaning, but also about art and inspiration, and the process that artists of all sorts go through, amalgamating all the art they consume, the culture around them and the facts and trivia they learn, and putting it through the mill of their own experience. The Crow is littered with quotes from songs, The Sandman is rife with literary, historical and mythical references, and between them there is a small but coherent thread of death and flight and black wings that carry the soul away, that I’ve chosen to weave into this artwork.

The print above on the buff paper was done in an edition of 26, of which I still have 6 (with some variation between prints owing to the process). I also have a single print on heavy natural-deckle handmade watercolor paper that’s one of a kind. No more of these can ever be made — the stones were long sanded down smooth and used for other artworks.

Urgent Grounding by Amy Crook
One of the hardest things about art is knowing when a piece is done.
This painting started out as a quick sketch that I filled in with some messy linework in a rich forest green. I started working in the background of rich orangey gold, and then at one point I stepped back and said, you know, I think I like it just as it is. I’ve had it hanging in my living room for a while now, and I haven’t ever wanted to go back and mess with it.
