Best of 2015: 13 Artist’s Picks

It’s the most reflective time of the year, when we all think back on what was shiny and good in the previous year. Since I enjoyed the post so much last year, I thought I’d once again choose a baker’s dozen of favorites, first month by month and finally one art to rule them all. Or something.
January
Some warmth and hope in the cold winter, and a bit of Hobbit fandom slipping in there as well.
February
The shine of a light in the darkness. A scattering of blue-ghost stars. And another one with words on it, this time a favorite Carl Sagan quote.
March
I love the way the green in this deconstructs itself into blue and gold and then rejoins into a pine green like the smoke off of three sticks of incense, lit together and drifting in and out of each others’ orbits.
April
No one ever sees what I see in my abstracts but I love that about them. Is it trees and a looming figure, is it warp of some fuzzy yarn waiting for the weft, is water dripping down steamed-up windows. What do you see?
May
I think I’m just going to do one of these every year or so forever, strange little explorations into monochrome and repetition of a single shape. Circle, circle, circle, splat.
June
I love the fog and the tree and the rush of wind across the plains, the figure almost swallowed by the fog but still there, looking your way.
July
Construction or destruction? The sky is scraped clean by the storm and the world runs to ruins.
August
Another contender for a favorite, this row of quaintly creepy Victorians are painted in an eerie monochrome. What lives inside each of them, or do they live in themselves?
September
Clouds, rain, buildings, and a limited palette — a theme much like the painting above and yet the results feel completely different.
October
Delicate brown trees against a beautiful sky full of orange, pink, and gold, and of course five black birds coming home to roost.
November
November had a lot of good to choose from, but this raven stole my heart with his subtle color and shimmer.
December
From a bright white moon to a rich red blood moon, and back to the strange cityscapes that are my new obsession.

And finally, BEES. I did the ink was and drew the bees live on Periscope, and ended up very happy indeed with the results. Just two colors, the amber and black, and it manages to capture all the buzzing beauty of the hive and honeycomb.
