More tentacles for Thursday! This bookmark is extra thick, drawn on black mat board rather than the paper I usually use. I drew a rainbow of jellyfish on here, and saved the gold for mysterious floating motes of something in the black depths.

This is the smallest of this week’s offerings, though the paper’s quite thick, making it a very solid little piece of art.

Above you can see the sparkle of the glittery pen I used for this set of jellyfish. Below, they’re hanging out with a book to show you how small and unassuming this bookmark is. Just the thing for a small and unassuming book full of secret awesome.

Sharpie Tentacles on a Flour Sack Dish Towel by Amy Crook

Sharpie Tentacles on a Flour Sack Dish Towel by Amy Crook

Bonus tentacles for Friday!

It should come as no surprise to anyone that I have fabric Sharpies as well as the regular kind. I bought them a few months ago, and I’ve finally acquired a package of the flour sack dish towels I like for decorating. This one’s been washed but not, obviously, ironed, and then decorated with pink and purple tentacles.

The tentacles are positioned so that they’re in the center if you fold the towel into thirds, and lay it over a towel bar, but most of the towel is still pristine for actually drying your dishes. It’s 28″ square, which is actually a bit bigger than the towels I’m used to, and the Sharpie says machine wash cold, hang dry, but I haven’t re-washed this one yet to test it.

I haven’t decided how much I’ll list these for on Etsy yet, I have seven to experiment with, but if you would like one as a donation gift instead of a Shrinky Dink, just let me know.

Speaking of which, thank you to all the lovely people who have donated or bought something from Etsy so far! I’m not going to name you darlings since I haven’t asked if I could, but just know that I really, really appreciate every one of you.

Implied Goldfish

Implied Goldfish, watercolor by Amy Crook, $399

This is the sort of art that just makes me feel a little bit more delighted with the world when I look at it. Happy little goldfish swim around partially camouflaged by the white paper, while rings of sparkly blue gel pin circle the three-dimensional salt formations. Are they stones? The first fat drops of rain? Strange portals to another world? The implications are endless.

Implied Goldfish, 7″x5″ mixed media on paper, $399 framed, with free shipping.

Now here’s where I admit something very silly: today’s art is inspired by one of my mismatched cereal bowls. Really they’re rice bowls, but I mostly use them for Cheerios.

Omnomnom Fishies!

Omnomnom Fishies!

I buy a lot of my dishes in Japantown and this is no exception. Maybe one of these days I’ll do a giant picspam on a Weds of a bunch of them. There’s kitties!

Below, you can see the sparkly salt and glittery pen next to the totally unconcerned fishies. The color’s a bit off, because this is the paper my camera likes to think is secretly red (hint: it’s not).

And finally we have the usual framed art, a peaceful little pond to sit on your desk or tuck into a tiny bit of wall space.

Baby Squid

Baby Squid, cartoon art by Amy Crook

Baby Squid, cartoon art by Amy Crook

Sometimes, I have to make art just so I can put it on a card in my Etsy shop, and this is one of those times. I’m trying to expand my offerings over there to something that isn’t quite so holiday-dependent. Thus we have a gender-free, geek-positive baby cards. I actually made two versions of this one: one is blank with just the image, and the other says, “Congratulations, it’s a…” on the front, and on the inside finishes with “Well, Congratulations, anyway.” Yes, I can even be sarcastic in the face of those giant soulful eyes.

I did have fun trying to make the cutest widdle squiddy you ever did see, though. The original would be awesome in a baby’s room somewhere, trying to out-cute the offspring.

The second-to-last day of Bookmark Week is upon us! I’ve already got a few ideas for next time, too, so I hope you’re enjoying the shift from small to super-small art this week.

This one I actually just doodled idly while I was on the phone, thinking of my larger piece Jellyfish Deeps as I worked. I thought about going back in to try to add a little color, but I liked the slight reddish cast the mat board gave to the white gel pen. I’m sure I’ll do another of these sometime, though, the jellyfish are just too entertaining.

Above you can see how the black mat board bled red into white of the ink, though it’s made much more pink by my camera here. The mat board is quite thick, but it would still slip easily into a book as long as you don’t shove it all the way to the spine. Below, I have the jellyfish hanging out with a hardcover, for size comparison.

Get Well Squid

Get Well Squid cartoon by Amy Crook

Get Well Squid by Amy Crook

A friend of mine is in the hospital right now, so I drew up this little guy and printed him on a card to help cheer her up while she undergoes treatment. I’m not sure how he’s going to get that bottle of pills open without a helping hand, but he sure looks like he could use them, poor guy.

Get Well Squid, 5″x7″ pen and ink and Copic markers on paper. Get him on a card of your own at my Etsy shop.
