We’ve skipped ahead a few years to Sherlock’s very first encounter with Detective Inspector Lestrade, putting us approximately five years before A Study in Pink. Here you can see Sherlock with his proper swishy coat and bad attitude, and poor Lestrade finding out that it doesn’t do to ignore a Holmes when he’s got observations for you.

These comics were commissioned by the wonderful Caroline, but you can get your very own prints here in the Sherlock section of my Etsy shop.

A few years into university, we find Mycroft back dealing with his little brother’s talent for making trouble. Here we see him trying out a line he uses frequently throughout his life, “It was an experiment!” I do wonder who won this battle of wills, what do you think?

Mycroft, ever the good big brother, has helped Sherlock move into his dorm room at university. Sherlock, of course, shows his appreciation with bad attitude. My personal favorite part are the textbooks, which include useful things like “SCIENCE!” and “More Science.”

Two weeks of Sherlock in a row? Madness! If you missed the first week, you can read them in order here. We meet up with the brothers just a few years on into Sherlock’s education, at age 15, when he’s picked up a new bad habit. Mycroft has given up on reasoning and gone straight to lecturing, oh, dear.

And here we come to the end of The Brothers Holmes: The Early Years. Tomorrow we’ll be starting with The Later Years, though, so all is not lost! You can always buy your very own print of either or both series in my Etsy shop.

In this one, we have 13-year-old Sherlock being dragged out of New Scotland Yard, still ranting about the Carl Powers case. And Mycroft, a mere 20 years old and already smoothing over his brother’s antics with the authorities. I foresee a number of similar circumstances in the future, alas.

Sherlock at 11 was enough trouble he got sent off to boarding school two years early, the same year Mycroft at 18 went to Oxford. I love the image of Mycroft fixing Sherlock’s tie while Sherlock makes slappy go-away hands at him. Oh, boys.

Also, we decided that all of Sherlock’s jokes about his brother’s weight were because Mycroft was chubby as a boy (as in the earlier comics). Then 18 hit and he had one of those growth spurts that left him skinny and all knees and elbows, much to Sherlock’s annoyance. Mycroft, however, is thrilled at the change.

Sherlock, age 9, and Mycroft at 16, giving a little recital for Mummy on piano and violin. Sherlock is in a mood, and poor Mycroft is just trying to get through it all without strangling his brother. I feel this is a common sentiment on Mycroft’s part.

Also, it’s really hard to draw a stick figure playing the violin. I’m just saying.
