H is for Heraldry, calligraphic illumination by Amy Crook

H is for Heraldry, calligraphic illumination by Amy Crook

I have to admit, when deciding on the colors and symbols for this letter with the help of Google, I also enlisted certain fannish friends. That’s how I ended up with Hedgehog Rampant and Otter Rampant as the creatures, making the H secret fan art on top of everything else.

The symbology of the elements of this particular shield are, at least according to Google and artistic intention (which I’m given to understand the latter is more important, anyway):

  • Gold/Yellow (Or): generosity
  • Blue (Azure): strength, loyalty
  • Black (Sable): constancy, grief
  • Chevron on the shield: protection, faithful service
  • Otter: one who lives life to the fullest
  • Hedgehog: provident provider
  • Arrows: military readiness
  • Holly: truth

H is for Heraldry, 5″x5″ mixed media on paper, nfs (sold). If you’d like an H of your own, you can find out how to commission one here.

Although the glitter looks a bit anemic in the scan, when it catches the light it’s really a lovely bright gold with a nice layer of golden yellow beneath it to add richness. Below, you can see how it looks framed and hanging out on my bookshelf with a little sneak preview of next week’s letter. (HI!)

Poor Mycroft.

Boba really does make the best spitballs ever, though. At least it was just one?

Sherlock Snuggle

Sherlock Snuggle cartoon by Amy Crook

Sherlock Snuggle
by Amy Crook

I started this cute little pair as a sketch for Sunday, but it just begged to be inked and colored. I use art like this on freebie bookmarks to go with my Etsy orders, so I figured the chin-noogies would serve a good purpose. I figured stick-figure Sherlock could basically hide behind his solid John, except of course for being so very much taller. Well, and the coat, but he’s not wearing the coat.

Sherlock Snuggle, 5.5″x8.5″ pen & ink and Copic marker on paper, nfs (sold).

Dr. Molly Hooper sketch

Dr. Molly Hooper character sketch by Amy Crook

Dr. Molly Hooper character sketch
by Amy Crook

The put-upon coroner from BBC’s Sherlock, Molly is going to join Mrs. Hudson in death in my next set of Baker Street Tinies. I did this little sketch of her character design to prepare, trying to capture her nervous smile, lab coat, and general adorableness.

Enjoy your Sunday, and hope you don’t meet Molly anytime soon.

Mrs. Hudson Sketch

Mrs. Hudson sketch by Amy Crook

Mrs. Hudson sketch by Amy Crook

I figured it was time to design some of the girls from Sherlock as stick people, so I’ve started with the redoubtable Mrs. Hudson. I’ll be doing Molly Hooper next, and then perhaps they’ll make their way to the Baker Street Tinies, if I can figure out a good way to work them in.

Giant Rats 16: Don’t You See?

"Do you see, John?" - a Sherlock comic by Amy Crook

“Do you see, John?” – a Sherlock comic by Amy Crook

For a few months now I’ve been contemplating the idea of doing a larger work with the Gorey-style shading, taking Sherlock and his Watson on an adventure that I could later put into a short book or something. Apparently, the first step on that path wasn’t deciding on a story or doing thumbnails, but instead drawing a random panel that might or might not fit in the middle, with a cute little one-shot joke.

If I do actually get far enough into the project it seems like it’ll finish (never a guarantee, heh), then I’ll want the originals to be Kickstarter incentives for printing a run of little books, I think, so this one won’t be for sale just yet.

These are the smaller size from my B is for Baker Street series, the art itself is 5″x3″ on the 7″x5″ paper, whereas the original four character drawings are 7″x5″ including the text, on a larger 8.5″x5.5″ sheet of paper. These are much easier to frame, and easier to finish as well with significantly fewer square inches of white space to be crosshatched in masochistic detail.

So, what do you think? Would you want a little Sherlock book, perhaps The Giant Rats of Sumatra?
