I’ve been indulging myself in the vice of instructional art videos on YouTube lately, and while I’ve learned a lot of ways to make some really awful art, I have gleaned a few interesting techniques. I found I guy making really ugly skies who was using a specific technique to make moons, and so I stole his idea and came up with this. It’s simple, but it has a nice dreamy, hazy feel to it as the crows rise up and vanish in the distance.

Above, you can see a close-up of the moon, though something about the angle and the paper’s texture smoothed away the shadows on the surface. Below, you can see it in a frame, hanging out with my iPhone and feather quill pen.

Tentacle Deeps 47

Tentacle Deeps 47 by Amy Crook
The tentacles are back, and it’s even Tuesday! This piece started with the crosshatched background in black Sharpie marker, and then watercolor in layers on top of it. The tentacles themselves are thickly scribbled on, so the iridescent paint has a bit of texture to it where it floats atop the watery teal wash.

Above, you can see the sunlight reflecting purple off the iridescent tentacles, and the metallic golden bubbles floating serenely nearby. Below, you can see the piece in a frame on my wall, though without the helpful iPhone which for some reason doesn’t yet come with an anti-gravity feature.

Lucky Squid

Lucky Squid cartoon by Amy Crook, $99
This little squid is pure self-indulgence! I was in my favorite place for bubble tea, and I noticed they had a bunch of various lucky cat sculptures around. The owner has always enjoyed my squid cards at the holidays, so I decided I needed to combine these two ideas with a proper Lucky Squid. I even googled the traditions so I could decide which details to keep (the red ears and white coat became red fins and white skin, and of course he’s got his gold coin), and which to ignore (a squid in a collar and bib didn’t seem like it would work). I even put him on a greeting card!

These two squid have found love in each other, the blue-eyed green squid and green-eyed blue squid making the perfect pair. They’ve just tied the knot, so congratulate them on their union! Just don’t ask which one’s the boy.

Above is the cheery red bow shining in the sun, on top of the squid’s teal head. The original is a gorgeous bright teal color, which of course no screen will ever reproduce properly. Dammit. Below, he’s hanging out in a frame with an octopus from Ikea. Well, pentapus, really. Ikea’s a bit odd that way.

Skull Paper

Skull Paper by Amy Crook
Another foray into Victorian-style wallpapers with a limited palette, this piece combines loose brushwork with muted, complementary colors. The top copper shade is slightly iridescent, which adds a certain decaying glory to the erratic pattern. It makes me think of a design mouldering away in some abandoned Gothic manor house, the grinning skulls only adding to the haunted gloom of the place.

Above, you can see the light reflecting off some of the warm copper paint, which is at its darkest and most iridescent in the halos around each skull. Below, you can see the piece in a frame, hanging out on my desk with some other examples of scribbly, imperfect wallpaper.

Fish Skeleton

Fish Skeleton watercolor by Amy Crook
This is another of those pieces that started with an experiment with water and paint, and the result made me think of a stream in a rainstorm with drops hitting the surface and a soft play of light down in the water below. I wanted to do something more interesting that just a random fish, though, so of course I went for a fish skeleton. I took a few liberties with fish anatomy, so this isn’t really a specific fish so much as the Death of Fish, as it were.
It’s a definite contrast to the whimsy of my previous Fish Skellington, swimming along all silent and deadly, or at least dead.

Above, you can see the fine details of rib and fin and skull wending their way through the random-seeming raindrops. Below, the skeleton has swum into a frame so you can enjoy the wee size of it, perfect for a desk at work or an unused bit of wall at home.
