The Brothers Holmes: The Early Years, part 4 of 6, comic by Amy Crook

Sherlock, age 9, and Mycroft at 16, giving a little recital for Mummy on piano and violin. Sherlock is in a mood, and poor Mycroft is just trying to get through it all without strangling his brother. I feel this is a common sentiment on Mycroft’s part.

Also, it’s really hard to draw a stick figure playing the violin. I’m just saying.

The Brothers Holmes: The Early Years, part 3 of 6, comic by Amy Crook

It’s Christmas in the Holmes household! Sherlock is, as you can see, a precocious 7-year-old, while Mycroft at 14 just tries to cope. I’m rather fond of the Lovecraftian tree with its wavy tentacle branches and big, eerie white ornaments, but that could just be me.

And here, dear readers, we see Sherlock at age 5, playing pirates while a 12-year-old Mycroft gamely tries to get some homework done. I think Mycroft secretly enjoyed it, though, or he wouldn’t have let Sherlock tie him to that chair.

The Brothers Holmes: The Early Years, part 1 of 6, comic by Amy Crook

I’ve finally finished both of my 6-part The Brothers Holmes comic series for my lovely commissioner, Holly, and so this week and next you’ll get to see them! The originals are, of course, spoken for, but I’ll have prints up in my Etsy shop soon.

In this first half, we explore the early years of the Holmes brothers growing up together. Each of these comics is its own little moment in the lives of the brothers, and we start with Sherlock at age 3 and Mycroft at 10, taking his little brother for a walk. I can imagine Sherlock’s “why” stage was more annoying than most.

Sherlock Discovers Bubble Tea, colored

now with bonus color!

After an inking mishap with this comic required some Photoshop love to make it workable, I put it away in a drawer sad for its fate. Then I decided to try to color it anyway, and through the magic of pinstripes you can’t tell where I mis-inked it at all, yay! I decided to do Sherlock’s clothes in cool blue and give Mycroft a nice warm yellow shirt and golden tie, which goes well with the warm brown tapioca ball stuck to his forehead.

Sherlock Discovers Bubble Tea, 7″x5″ pen & ink and Copic markers on paper, nfs (sold).

Poor Mycroft.

Boba really does make the best spitballs ever, though. At least it was just one?

Weeble Wednesday: Mycroft Holmes & DI Lestrade

Mycroft Holmes and DI Lestrade cartoons by Amy Crook

Mycroft Holmes and DI Lestrade by Amy Crook

I’ve been trying to give my weebles a little more life, so I took on the challenge of drawing Mycroft Holmes leaning smugly with his umbrella, and the put-upon Detective Inspector Lestrade, both from the 2009 BBC Sherlock.

I also made judicious use of photographic references, which I think really captures the features of these actors – it’s excellent practice for making clients into cartoons and vice versa. A year of working to put other people’s faces into cartoon form has really improved my grasp on what features add the most character.
