Zen Red Bird
Thursday, December 15th, 2011
I was enjoying the pure, rich red pigment of one of my red Japanese watercolors, and I decided to paint something simple and zen. I added in just a touch of black for the bright eye and dark beak to create a seasonal red bird, but I think the essence of the image is in that first red swoosh down the bird’s back. It makes a good reminder to keep it simple this holiday season, and not go flying right out of the frame trying to do too much.

Gingerbread Skellington sketch by Amy Crook
I don’t know if you’ve seen these awesome cookie cutters, but I couldn’t resist sketching a little homage in some poor unsuspecting soul’s coloring book. It’s like holiday cheer, really!

Tentacle Monster Sketch

Tentacle Monster sketch by Amy Crook
I saved this guy for Tuesday for obvious reasons. I’m not sure if he’s Lovecraftian or just really creepy, but he was fun to draw, like a Van Gogh sunflower gone very, very wrong.

Evil Wreath Muppet Thingy sketch by Amy Crook
What? They can’t all have awesome titles. It’s been a busy weekend of coughing up my lungs and selling coloring books on Etsy, so you’ll be getting more coloring book sketches for the foreseeable future. Enjoy!

Elder Thing sketch

Elder Thing sketch by Amy Crook
Another little coloring book sketch! This one is a proper Lovecraftian beastie, the Elder Thing, which is symmetrical along five sides instead of bilaterally. I didn’t really look up all the details, so I’m pretty sure I got some of the bits not quite right, but I don’t really mind. He looks beastly enough like this.

Cuppa Shoggoth?

Cuppa Shoggoth? sketch by Amy Crook
I’m still not feeling well, so I’ll just let this little coloring book doodle (that is, one of the sketches I usually draw in the inside front cover whenever someone buys a Cthulhu Coloring Book or Monster Heart Coloring Book) speak for itself.
Or something.

Potions Master

Potions Master sketch by Amy Crook
I did a pair of Snape sketches a few years back, and I found this one lurking on my hard drive when I went looking for pieces to round out the week. They were sent off to friends who hopefully still appreciate them, and I’ve always liked this one a bit better of the two (ssh, don’t tell). I’d originally bought this paper hoping to do the trick with black & white Conte pencils, but the paper itself was too pale for the white to work will. Still, it’s come in handy for other pieces like this one — one thing I’ve learned over the years is that art supplies will always be useful someday!
