Word Art, week 3
Sunday, November 22nd, 2015
The days keep flying by, especially this week! I was sick and sleepy and pathetic, so I chose a lot of easy words. I’m feeling better now, though, and hope to get caught up on my NaNoWriMo words tonight (I’m about half a day behind now, a 100-word day really eats your lead).
Enjoy 7 new words – which one are you going to keep in your lexicon?
40404 words!

Word Art, week 2
Sunday, November 15th, 2015
How are we already halfway through November? NaNoWriMo is going pretty well despite the pollen, which seems determined to turn my brains to mush. I decided to confine these to the same paper and orientation, but otherwise allow myself to do whatever felt right for each day, whether that’s ink art or comic doodles or a UV-glowing ghost.
Which one’s your favorite new (or old) word?
28182 words and counting!

Word Art, week 1
Sunday, November 8th, 2015
November is all about NaNoWriMo for me, with my goal this month to write 2000 words per day. I’m working on the third book in my Consulting Magic series, and at the same time I’ve set myself another challenge — drawing a word a day. I enjoyed Inktober so much I wanted to continue the daily art, so I thought the best way to warm up for writing was with more words! I’ll be rounding these up on Sundays, so enjoy them while they last.
14641 words down, many more to go!

Periscope
Monday, September 21st, 2015
What’s Periscope, you might ask?
- Periscope is an app (owned by Twitter) that lets you make live videos with your phone.
- Periscope videos (or scopes) last 24 hours before they vanish forever.
- I have Periscope set to tweet when I’m on live.
- You can watch on the app or on the web, including the replay (for as long as it lasts).
- You don’t have to make videos to have an account and watch them.
- You can text chat to the person making the video, share the video on Twitter, and give them “hearts” by tapping on the screen during the live feed.
- Yes, it’s yet another form of social media.
- Kind of like Youtube and Snapchat had a baby and sold it to Twitter.
- But I actually really like it.
- My username is, predictably, amysnotdeadyet.
I’m using it to make art! Or, well, to let you watch me make art. I painted the little hummingbird sketch above live on Periscope the other day, and below there’s two more things that owe their lives to me wanting to draw something on Periscope.

Eames & Arthur bookmarks by Amy Crook
Well, actually Eames and Arthur (above) owe their existence in part to Periscope, and in part to wanting to work on their character design for a commission. But the merdude below was one of my first Periscope experiments!

You can see at the top of the page I wrote, “Hi! I can’t see you chat,” because when I’m drawing or painting the phone is up over my shoulder and, like everything on Periscope, the chats are ephemeral and disappear before I can go looking.
I’m amysnotdeadyet on Periscope — come say hi!

Calligraphy Sketches
Wednesday, August 26th, 2015
I’ve been doing some calligraphy sketches on Instagram lately, and I thought I’d share them here for those of you that aren’t there. Some are little modern-day blessings, some are practice for larger future pieces, and one is a contemplation of purpose. Enjoy!

August Patreon Sketches
Wednesday, August 12th, 2015
My wonderful $5+ Patreon patrons get to ask for a sketch from me every month, and this time 3 of them left prompts!
Kim asked for Q in a sweater, and so we decided of course on the warm jumper from the Spectre trailer. Then Blaine asked for Bond to go with Q, and I decided on the tactical turtleneck from the promo shots, and their eyes meeting across the boundaries of the sketches. And, of course, posing 007 like a Bond Girl. It’s only fair, really.
Jeff, being of a less shippy mindset, asked for something meta: a drawing of a Minion drawing a Minion.

Ink Tests

bookmark in J. Herbin Cacao du Brésil ink by Amy Crook
I recently took a few bottles of ink off a friend who was thinning out her art supplies (which makes me sound far more generous and less grabbyhandsy than I really was), and I thought I’d share a few of the tests I did.
First up, above, is a bookmark painted with the lovely brown, which gave me rich layered colour in the trees.

Second we have one of the two delicious greys she sent me, this one a lighter, almost lavendery grey that also layered interestingly, though never got very dark. Below is the real treat, a sample size of the gold-flecked Stormy Grey, which I used to doodle this little city in my sketchbook.

I really like them, though I think they all will do better on higher quality paper than my test swatches here. There’s going to be some Stormy Grey in this month’s Floating Gallery (as well as another experiment using a fourth bottle of ink from her stash). Get on my list if you want to see it first!
