Seekers, Harry Potter art by Amy Crook

“Who wins if It gets the Snitch?”
Seekers, Harry Potter art by Amy Crook

I’ve done so many paintings of tentacles rising up from mysterious depths that I thought it might be fun to do a set striving for the heights instead. These pale, half-translucent tentacles are reaching toward an errant Golden Snitch, and disrupting someone’s game of Quidditch.

If it’s not one thing, it’s another. Just ask Harry Potter.

Above, you can see the Golden Snitch next to an ordinary dime for scale. Tiny, tiny scale. Below, for a different sort of scale, I’ve temporarily put the painting in a standard 8″x10″ frame so you can imagine how it would fit into your home. Because it totally would fit into your home. I mean, doesn’t everyone need tentacles?

Adrift, Doctor Who art by Amy Crook

“You’re sure you know where we’re going?”
Adrift, Doctor Who art by Amy Crook

After doing Mario’s Cave, I started to get more ideas for putting tiny bits of the things I’m a fan of into my paintings in a meaningful, interesting way. Tomorrow’s is actually the next one I thought of, but I’m saving it for the traditional day. This one I painted the pattern of waves-or-maybe-scales, and then staring at it I thought, I could put a TARDIS, just there.

Floating adrift on a sea of scales-or-maybe-waves seems like just the sort of trouble the Doctor would get himself into.

Above, you can see the actual size of the wee TARDIS next to a dime, though the actual colors are not quite so brightly cyan as all that. Below, I’ve temporarily tucked it into a 10″x8″ frame to show you how it might look.

I saw some plushies a bit like this in Japantown the other day, so I was inspired to scribble this little guy.

Look out! Rawr!

This cheerful little trickster was by request of the wonderful patron who commissioned the Forest Dragon. He’s totally contemplating what mischief he can get into next.

Sharpie Week: Polar Bear

Sharpie Polar Bear sketch by Amy Crook

It’s Sharpie Week!

I’m ridiculously tired, given that all I’ve done is run around after my house guest, while she finished the Escape From Alcatraz Triathlon yesterday. But then, she trained for the tri, and I’m a lazy antisocial hobbit.

Today’s request was from my BFF, who was on a glacier last week. Polar bear sez grr.

Thistledown, watercolor by Amy Crook

Thistledown, watercolor by Amy Crook, $169

I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with this once I painted in the sky and the grass, but then the idea of thistles came into my head. I like the way the little sneaky bubbles in the grass echo the centers on the flowers, and of course these are the sort of thistles that stare at you. But don’t worry, I’m sure they’re thinking totally harmless flower-thoughts while they do. They’re not thinking about how they outnumber you at all.

Really.

Thistledown, 8″x4″ watercolor on paper, $169 with free shipping.

I slipped the piece into an 8″x10″ frame so you could get a sense of the scale, and of course I’d be happy to more permanently frame it for you for a small additional fee. Just drop me a line!

Mario’s Cave

Mario's Cave by Amy Crook

Mario’s Cave by Amy Crook

This piece owes its origins firstly to my childhood spent playing Super Mario Bros. on the Nintendo, and more recently to Steph of nerdJERK and Lawrence Yang, both of whom make awesome pop-culture-inspired art. I was feeling a bit down about this and that, and I’d had this abstract, cave-like background sitting around for a long time. I decided it was time to just do something silly to amuse myself, so I made the cave from whence the Mario mushrooms originate. There’s mostly blue Mini Mushrooms (they make Mario small) and red Power Ups (that make him big), but there’s a few sneaky purple Poison Mushrooms and a trio of green 1ups.

Mario’s Cave, 5″x7″ watercolor on paper.

I put it in its usual frame-with-iPhone shot so you can see just how tiny the shrooms are.
