The Brothers Holmes Bonus Comics
Saturday, March 16th, 2013
In talking to the person who originally commissioned The Brothers Holmes comics, we found two little snippets from other peoples’ stories that inspired her to ask for me to add a pair of color bonus comics to the series. Above, we have a 3-year-old Sherlock in the midst of an obsession with xylophones, and poor Mycroft trying to be all grown up at 10.
Below, you can see that 8-year-old Sherlock’s heard a Monster in the tree that hides his box of treasures, and he’s relying on his big brother Mycroft, now 15, to rescue his things.

Rules Gremlin
Tuesday, January 15th, 2013
I’m afraid this Tuesday is tentacle-free, which is probably against one of the many rules on this Gremlin’s parchment. He’s another commission for Jo VanEvery to use in her work — she’s promised to post about him and yesterday’s cartoon soon, so keep an eye out! I found the first sketch for this in my photos recently (I take iPhone photos to show a client their sketches rather than scanning them, to save a bit of time), and I was amused to remember that he’d originally been tall and skinny. We both liked his scroll so much that I kept the overall height, and instead added some books to stand on and made him wide and squat instead.

The Spectre of Professionalism
Monday, January 14th, 2013
Once again Jo VanEvery has commissioned an awesome cartoon to use in her work. She consults academics about academic career sorts of things, and one of the issues that often comes up is the spectre of professionalism. He’s modeled a bit after Marley from A Christmas Carol since I was watching the Muppet version when I did his sketch, which gives him a delightful sort of gloom that goes well with the snippet of academic-speak, overflowing inbox, monogrammed briefcase and perfectly boring suit and tie. His humorless expression tops off the chains of expectation perfectly.
Here’s hoping your Monday isn’t quite so burdened, and that you have plenty of caffeine regardless.

221b Becomes Tattoos
Wednesday, December 5th, 2012
Remember these? The wonderful Nicole & Mo wanted a pair of tattoo designs that were part Sherlock, part Holmes, and part Edward Gorey. They took my artwork to their tattoo artist, who promptly told them “no,” hah! I guess I should’ve used bigger pens.
They each got to choose one section to fit on their arms for the final tattoos, which you can see below.
Nicole, left, has an eerie outside view of 221b Baker Street on her forearm. She had it drawn as it might look if it were a single townhouse instead of part of the larger building, and also transported to a rather spookier version of London. Mo, on the right, got the fireplace at 221b as her tattoo, minus the intricate wallpaper. We moved the skull from another wall to join the skull on the mantel, but otherwise hers is more faithful to Sherlock‘s actual set.
I really love the way their tattoo artist interpreted my delicate linework into her own art form, preserving as much of the detail as possible while keeping the designs clear and clean so they’d age well.
But the best part is that the tattoos went to London! Nicole sent me the best photo, below, of her tattoo outside the building they actually used for 221b Baker Street in the show. Sadly the Sherlock set wasn’t hiding inside for Mo to get a photo of hers. Wouldn’t that be something awesome?

The Brothers Holmes: The Later Years, part 6 of 6
Sunday, November 25th, 2012
If there’s one thing in the world the Holmes brothers can agree on, it’s that John’s fashion sense is a sartorial crime. I couldn’t imagine doing these comics without John making at least an appearance, and it felt appropriate for his awful brown suit from The Great Game to be the source of a single moment of brotherly accord. And an excellent note on which to end the series!
If you’d like, you can read them all over again here. Or, get your very own prints here in the Sherlock section of my Etsy shop. My wonderful patron, Caroline, commissioned the originals, but she’s willing to share!

The Brothers Holmes: The Later Years, part 5 of 6
Saturday, November 24th, 2012
Sherlock has been looking for a new flat when we first see him in the show. Here we can see how he got himself kicked out of his flat on Montague Street in the first place. I’m not sure what that slime is creeping down the stairs, but I’m certain it counts as more than a minor disagreement. And those trousers are ruined.
These comics were commissioned by the wonderful Caroline, but you can get your very own prints here in the Sherlock section of my Etsy shop.

The Brothers Holmes: The Later Years, part 4 of 6
Friday, November 23rd, 2012
We’ve skipped ahead a few years to Sherlock’s very first encounter with Detective Inspector Lestrade, putting us approximately five years before A Study in Pink. Here you can see Sherlock with his proper swishy coat and bad attitude, and poor Lestrade finding out that it doesn’t do to ignore a Holmes when he’s got observations for you.
These comics were commissioned by the wonderful Caroline, but you can get your very own prints here in the Sherlock section of my Etsy shop.
