First off, thank you to everyone who helped out with my Big Art Sale, either through linking, retweeting, or purchasing. I made enough to get the plane tickets! And then Mom moved the date (again, omg) before I could buy them, but that’s okay, it’s in June now and I have plane tickets and all is well.

As a thank you to all of you, I’ve decided to start giving away free wallpapers from time to time. I’m starting with the 3 pieces above, Weeble Cthulhu, Winchester the shark, and Molten Sky. Just click the links below to get your goodies!

Enjoy!

Mushroom Cave by Amy Crook

I had a Grand Day Out yesterday, getting canvases and hanging out with friends, and I totally forgot to post my daily art, so today you get a double dose. These are both doodles out of my bedside sketchbook, the first inspired by, of all things, the Facebook game Fairyland. The second was just a bit of odd playing around with shapes that blossomed into these reed-like creatures, bowing in sequence. Alien ambassadors or odd plants?

This one-of-a-kind monoprint started out abstract and grew more defined to me once it came off the plate and onto the page. When I look at it, I see the impish face of the fae Puck peeking out of a riot of flowers. What do you see?

I keep a little notebook of cheap blank paper by my bed, with a mechanical pencil stuck in the spiral binding. This is something I drew last night, while drinking Zen green tea liqueur, eating Mother’s lemon cookies, and listening to Naomi talk about marketing for artists. Go figure.

Untitled (with Wolf)

Untitled by Amy Crook and Wolf

Untitled by Amy Crook and Wolf

This piece was painted years ago with my friend Wolf, an artist I’ve since lost touch with. We spent a couple of lazy afternoons with the painting laid out flat on the floor and acrylic paints all around us, finding agreement on the palette, one of us working in one place while the other worked on another, switching whenever it suited us. Our styles meshed well, though we only did the one piece together.

Despite the morbid subject matter, seeing it always reminds me of the possibility that happens when two artists work together to create something new to both.

Key to My Heart

It’s been a long time since I had a chance to cast in bronze, but I still have a few pieces left. In this one, a small, abstracted figure stands on a strange landscape of texture and shape, with a small keyhole in the center of his chest.

The entire sculpture is actually quite small — the figure is a bare 2″ tall, and his unusual landscape is 5″x7″ at its widest points, and 3″ tall where it curls up behind him.

I left on most of the random textures created by the casting process, and in fact the cavity from which the piece gets its name was created by the shrinking of metal away from the sprue at the point of contact. The hollow made such a perfect keyhole shape that I decided to keep it rather than filling it in.

The colors were created with a combination of chemical patina that was heated with a blow torch until it bonded with the metal, and the passage of time and the oils from being held by human hands. It will continue to evolve as the piece is exposed to handling and the environment, the browns growing richer and the patterns changing subtly.
