It’s Bookmark Week again, the last one for the year! I think that a bookmark-sized piece of original art makes a wonderful holiday gift idea or stocking stuffer, don’t you?

We’ll start the week off with a sliver of a moon hiding half out of sight, with swirling, iridescent mist curling through the black sky. The mist is a color called “duochrome hibiscus” which wavers between a violet-ish blue and fuchsia, and definitely took on the bluer tone here.

Above, you can see a bit of the pink sheen on the cloud, and the tiny embedded sparkles as well. Below, you can see the bookmark with a fairly standard hardcover book for size.

The Brothers Holmes: The Later Years, part 6 of 6

The Brothers Holmes: The Later Years, part 6 of 6, comic by Amy Crook

If there’s one thing in the world the Holmes brothers can agree on, it’s that John’s fashion sense is a sartorial crime. I couldn’t imagine doing these comics without John making at least an appearance, and it felt appropriate for his awful brown suit from The Great Game to be the source of a single moment of brotherly accord. And an excellent note on which to end the series!

If you’d like, you can read them all over again here. Or, get your very own prints here in the Sherlock section of my Etsy shop. My wonderful patron, Caroline, commissioned the originals, but she’s willing to share!

The Brothers Holmes: The Later Years, part 5 of 6, comic by Amy Crook

Sherlock has been looking for a new flat when we first see him in the show. Here we can see how he got himself kicked out of his flat on Montague Street in the first place. I’m not sure what that slime is creeping down the stairs, but I’m certain it counts as more than a minor disagreement. And those trousers are ruined.

These comics were commissioned by the wonderful Caroline, but you can get your very own prints here in the Sherlock section of my Etsy shop.

We’ve skipped ahead a few years to Sherlock’s very first encounter with Detective Inspector Lestrade, putting us approximately five years before A Study in Pink. Here you can see Sherlock with his proper swishy coat and bad attitude, and poor Lestrade finding out that it doesn’t do to ignore a Holmes when he’s got observations for you.

These comics were commissioned by the wonderful Caroline, but you can get your very own prints here in the Sherlock section of my Etsy shop.

Q is for Quilling

Q is for Quilling, calligraphic illumination by Amy Crook

A break from the Holmes Brothers to give thanks for getting my Q on! I finally finished this one yesterday, right under the wire, and I’ve got 4 letters left to do before I’m done. If you’re interested in one of the later letters for a holiday gift, just email me and I’ll give you a preview!

Quilling is an interesting craft for which the supplies are a bit hard to find! I ended up getting Twirled Paper by Klutz Press, which comes with a bunch of lovely colors, and a book of very useful instructions, as well as the “quill” for actually making the coils of paper. After a bit of practice and trial & error, I ended up with a lovely purple Q with a long, curly triple tail.

Q is for Quilling, 5″x5″ quilling paper, glue, Japanese watercolor, and glitter gel pen on paper.

Above, you can see a detail of the twirly coils of paper and the sparkly green border. Below, you can see it in a frame — I’ve taken out the glass of a normal frame here, but you might consider a shadow box to protect the coils from dust, kitties and curious fingers.

A few years into university, we find Mycroft back dealing with his little brother’s talent for making trouble. Here we see him trying out a line he uses frequently throughout his life, “It was an experiment!” I do wonder who won this battle of wills, what do you think?

These comics were commissioned by the wonderful Caroline, but you can get your very own prints here in the Sherlock section of my Etsy shop.

Mycroft, ever the good big brother, has helped Sherlock move into his dorm room at university. Sherlock, of course, shows his appreciation with bad attitude. My personal favorite part are the textbooks, which include useful things like “SCIENCE!” and “More Science.”

These comics were commissioned by the wonderful Caroline, but you can get your very own prints here in the Sherlock section of my Etsy shop.
