Baby Squid, cartoon art by Amy Crook

Baby Squid, cartoon art by Amy Crook

Sometimes, I have to make art just so I can put it on a card in my Etsy shop, and this is one of those times. I’m trying to expand my offerings over there to something that isn’t quite so holiday-dependent. Thus we have a gender-free, geek-positive baby cards. I actually made two versions of this one: one is blank with just the image, and the other says, “Congratulations, it’s a…” on the front, and on the inside finishes with “Well, Congratulations, anyway.” Yes, I can even be sarcastic in the face of those giant soulful eyes.

I did have fun trying to make the cutest widdle squiddy you ever did see, though. The original would be awesome in a baby’s room somewhere, trying to out-cute the offspring.

Above I have him put into a frame so you can imagine how it would look. Below, you can see what he looks like on the snarky version of the card.

Get Well Squid cartoon by Amy Crook

Get Well Squid by Amy Crook

A friend of mine is in the hospital right now, so I drew up this little guy and printed him on a card to help cheer her up while she undergoes treatment. I’m not sure how he’s going to get that bottle of pills open without a helping hand, but he sure looks like he could use them, poor guy.

Weeble April Winchell cartoon by Amy Crook

Weeble April Winchell cartoon by Amy Crook

Sorry about the silence, I wasn’t feeling well at the end of last week. So, we’re starting the week with a Weeble!

April’s Army is an Etsy Street Team of fans of the site Regretsy.com. Every month, they take donations and open up the April’s Army Etsy shop with all manner of wacky crafts. This is my first contribution, the incomparable April Winchell (also known as Helen Killer on the site) done up in her most “whimsicle” finery and cartooned as a weeble.

I’m donating 5 cards and the original, because what says “I’m thinking of you” better than weeble fuckery?

Weeble Wednesday: Moody Businessman

Weeble Wednesday: Moody Businessman by Amy Crook

Once long ago I considered trying to make some vector stock art to sell on one of those stock art sites, and this little guy was one of my earliest weebles. Obviously, I’ve since given that up — the finicky requirements of doing vector art for stock uses just drove me batty. My moody businessman lives on as an example of how I really prefer natural media, though I keep myself from totally losing all my skills by occasionally doing something like my Super-Cute Squid.

Sketch Sale Wrapup

Saturday, June 25th, 2011

The last two sketches from my May sketch sale are of people rather than characters.

Happy Father's Day sketch by Amy Crook, all rights reserved

Jennifer Hoesing wanted a sketch of her husband and their new baby to commemorate their first Father’s Day.

Nathan Briggs sketch by Amy Crook, all rights reserved

And Nathan Briggs wanted to see a cartoon of himself.

I think I ought to do a cartoon of me in this style, or the refined version thereof anyway, so I can add it to the Be a Cartoon page options.

Thanks again to everyone who participated in the sale!

Delight Gremlin, cartoon by Amy Crook

The charming Chris Anthony is has recently re-branded his business as The Delightworks! As part of his new thing, he’s planning to sneak in some easter eggs throughout the site, so he asked me to do a cartoon for him. Instead of drawing him, which I’ve already done, he asked me to draw what I imagined his little gremlin might look like from the front. If you’re not sure where the original is, it’s hiding out on his home page, just keep looking.

He’s not quite a weeble, but I figured he was cute enough for a Wednesday, anyway.

Weeble Wednesday: Me 3

Cartoon self-portrait by Amy Crook

Weeble self-portrait by Amy Crook

Weeble Wednesday brings you more me! My red dye is fading, and I decided to do a new one to reflect my current style. Of course, I’ll have to ditch the cardigan and boots now that the weather’s warmed up, but nothing’s perfect, right?

I think this is my most accurate cartoon-me to date — as I was working on it, I actually pulled up some photos and realized that I have very sarcastic eyebrows. I suppose one needs to be naturally good at something, right?

I couldn’t figure out what I wanted the shirt to say, and I’m happy to take suggestions. I want something clever but work safe, which nixed most of my ideas one way or the other.

If you want to be a cartoon yourself, you can click here to get your very own weeble, chibi, fairy or just silly cartoon!
