Rainy Day

Much like the fleeting shine of each individual raindrop, this painting is an optical illusion in your palm. On its face it seems like a softly violet abstract, with a depth and texture like a city street in the rain.
If you turn it into the light, blue ripples appear in the puddles, the last sun of twilight reflecting off the moment the drops hit just right.
Rain is so peaceful and soothing sometimes, and this painting is like a rainy day you can pull out at any time. What are you saving it for, and for it?

Storm Dragon

Storm Dragon, 8″x8″ watercolor on Fluid watercolor paper
Fans of Spirited Away will recognize the dragon flying off in the distance, though he’s color-shifted slightly bluer to match the gathering storm clouds.
The clouds are a celebration of filigree and fluffiness, looking heavy enough to squeeze rain out of and down onto the distant, unseen lands below. The sunrise is staining everything with the last of its bright mineral pink, and it sparkles off the hidden shine in the painting when seen from just the right angle.
Spirals small and large give the clouds their beautiful texture, adding dimension to the highlights as well as the shadows.

This fierce dragon has fire in her eyes and ice in her scales. She’s spiralling downward in near-abstract swishes of amethyst, graphite, and interference blue.
Do you need to be reminded of your own fierceness?
This is one of those pieces that’s most beautiful in person, where you can turn the page this way and that and catch the highlights and shadows, pulling out details that are otherwise invisible.

If you’re still having apocalypse feelings, here’s another vision of a terrible future for you!
The shimmering blue moon has a fissure at its heart, and another mysterious light shines through the clouds high above. The skies are charcoal and violet with whatever destruction came through, and the buildings are blackened ruins. Greenery crawls up the sides of some, while others still smoke or are ochre with rust.
Whatever city used to stand here, there’s not much left.

Only 3 pieces into the Formations series, and already it has broken away from the subdued dichromatic palette of the first two.
A motley of subtle colors play together in this rocky planetoid, and two different sets of formations are highlighted, in interference red and blue, colors that only reveal themselves in certain lights.

Like soothing waves of water, this blue-violet color contains surprising amounts of detail once you look past the initial impression. There’s a very subtle hint of sparkle here and there, the smallest shapes of water and spray, and of course the more obvious gradations of flow.
The tall, narrow rectangular shape echoes a hallway flowing with water rather than a more natural stream.
