Tmesis
Tuesday, March 22nd, 2016
Grammar words are the best words. Today’s fan-bloody-tastic example is “tmesis,” which is also the only word in the English language to start with ‘tm.’
I did the inks for this on Periscope, and then took a few days to pick a lovely Primatek palette of three beautifully granulating natural pigments to keep with the pointy goth theme. The rusty Minnesota Pipestone had a tendency to smudge and travel on me, so I went with that and added a “bloody” fingerprint over the tmesis in my tmesis.
Dreamt is the only word to end in ‘mt.’

Blacks Don’t Match
Sunday, February 7th, 2016
Two lovely, granulating off-blacks float on top of a sea of colour, red and gold, turquoise and lavender, and just a bit of secret shine that comes through at just the right angle.
The textures in this abstract are reminiscent of an oil painting, the rough scrape of palette knife and layered color hinting at what lies beneath.
In the upper left, cool colours are hidden beneath a ruddy black, the texture flirting around the idea of a pattern both above and below. The lower right has a different texture, a fiery orange peeking through a blue-black like branches, ruffles, shingles.
What do you see?
Above, you can really see the shining spirals masked beneath the black. Below, there’s a third shade of black in the frame, showing off this lovely larger piece.

Cuppa Calm
Monday, October 5th, 2015
This is my favourite cuppa yet! The colours are mostly mineral pigments, softly desaturated and granulating in beautiful ways. There’s a wabi-sabi quality to the cup, with its uneven glaze, that perfectly cradles the beautiful green tea.
You can imagine breathing in the steam, cradling the warmth of the cup, the texture of it against your hands. Taking another deep breath of the subtle aroma before tasting the hot tea, its flavour grassy or nutty or floral. Whatever calms you, that’s what’s waiting in this lovely, earthy cuppa.

Above, you can see the echo of the cup’s colors in the mountain scene on the tag. Below, it waits calmly to find its perfect place in life.

Sea Turtle 4

It’s a baaaaby sea turtle!
This little cutie is swimming in clear blue waters, lit by the sun streaking down from above. His fins and shell are limned in golden light, almost melting into the sunbeams. The rich purpurite mineral paint blends beautifully with the artificial quinacridone gold to give the turtle an earthy feel in contrast with its watery environs.

Jade City
Wednesday, September 2nd, 2015
Every time I paint a new City, I think, this one is my favorite. It’s the inevitable consequence of hours spent filling in the tiny, monochrome details and fleshing out my imaginary worlds.
This gorgeous jade city is besieged by a magnificent purple rainstorm, the violet clouds hanging above in dark spirals while the rain streaks down the page. The patterns of the rain helped determine the shape of the city it fell upon; gaps in the runnels became the buildings in this layered, mysterious skyline.

Above, you can see the tops of a few of the buildings besieged by the beautifully textured rainfall. Below, the city waits in its frame like a window onto another, stranger world.

Sea Turtle 2
Sunday, February 8th, 2015
A bonus post! This little turtle was the predecessor to yesterday’s art, and when I was looking on the blog to link to him, I realized I hadn’t ever given him his own post.
I really like the splooshy-bright turquoise sea he’s swimming through, which makes me think of the Caribbean, especially the way his simple 3-color palette stands out against it. He’s done in the same gold and green as the third turtle, but with white for highlights rather than the purple shadows.

Above, you can see the details of his shell and determined little face. Below, the piece is in a tiny frame, all ready to add a splash of marine life to someone’s desk.

Sea Turtle 3
Saturday, February 7th, 2015
This sea turtle is full of attitude. Whatchoo lookin’ at? I’m just swimmin’ here.
I love how his face came out, glaring defiantly straight out of the painting, full of confidence.
He’s entirely painted in three colors and with one brush, with a fourth color (and a different brush) for the background. His colors are mostly the earthy mineral tones of Primatek paints, offset by the vivid Quinacridone gold that’s in both the sunlight and the turtle.
He’s small, but he’s fierce.

Above, you can see his face and the expression of giving no fucks at all. Below, you can see him in his temporary frame, before he swam off to his new home.
