Santa Hats Are Cool, Doctor Who parody art by Amy Crook
The eleventh Doctor is very proud of his new headgear. Let’s hope this one survives more than five minutes before getting destroyed.

Tentacle Spiral 4

Tentacle Spiral 4 by Amy Crook
Every time I do a new piece to this series, I get confused about whether it’s Tentacle Spiral or Tentacle Spirals. For the record, there’s no s on the end, just to be extra confusing.
This one’s clearly influenced by my watching ofA Nightmare Before Christmas this week (twice). The tentacles spiral in from all sides to obscure the golden harvest moon. I went and carried the black paint out over the black paper so there was better continuity between it and the tentacles, which makes it extra velvety-dark in the background portions.
Tentacle Spiral 4, 5″x5″ watercolor on paper, nfs (sold).

Above, you can see the delicate curls of black coming to obscure the yellow moon. Below, the piece is lurking in a frame to show you the size, just perfect for a desk or that little bit of wall in that one hallway that’s too small for anything else. You know the one I mean.

Tea or Death, a Sherlock comic by Amy Crook
John is most displeased to have woken up to find all the tea in the house sacrificed to one of Sherlock’s mad experiments. Let’s hope for everyone’s sake that Sherlock errs on the side of caution and comes home with a nice big box!

Misty Moon

Misty Moon, watercolor by Amy Crook
This piece is of course related to the Fairytale Sky series, but something about the way the moon was surrounded by a halo of silver demanded a different name. The clouds are looser, too, lots of extra curls and and brushstrokes escaping the main spirals. I got to use some nifty new paint on them, a duochrome aqua that changes from bluer to greener depending on the angle and the light.
The whole painting is small enough to tuck into a corner of your desk and give you a bit of mystery whenever you want it.

Above and below you can see the art from different angles, with the mist showing up sky blue or aqua green depending on how the light hits.

And below you can see it in its frame, all ready to make its way to your desk, bedside table or bookshelf.

Sherlock Discovers Bubble Tea, colored

Sherlock Discovers Bubble Tea comic by Amy Crook
now with bonus color!
After an inking mishap with this comic required some Photoshop love to make it workable, I put it away in a drawer sad for its fate. Then I decided to try to color it anyway, and through the magic of pinstripes you can’t tell where I mis-inked it at all, yay! I decided to do Sherlock’s clothes in cool blue and give Mycroft a nice warm yellow shirt and golden tie, which goes well with the warm brown tapioca ball stuck to his forehead.

J is for Juxtapose

J is for Juxtapose, calligraphic illumination by Amy Crook
I wasn’t sure how well I could manage Juxtaposition, but I’m really happy with the contrasts and superimpositions in this piece, from the colors of subtle buff titanium with bright purple and rich teal, to the way the dark purple ink outline of the neat lower J bled through into the messy top letter. The light purple glitter strips in the upper left blend very differently with the background than the dark inked spirals in the lower right, too.
J is for Juxtapose, 5″x5″ mixed media on paper, nfs (sold). If you’d like a J of your own, you can find out how to commission one here.

Above, you can see the shine of purple glitter and a close-up of many of the various overlapping styles. Below, the J is hanging out with the A, which shares a similar color scheme but a nicely different feel.

The Wily Sherlocktopus in His Natural Habitat
cartoon by Amy Crook
There’s a fandom trope where Sherlock, who is both offputting and always up in John’s space in the show, is one of those sleepers who wraps around his bedmate like an octopus and never lets go. Poor John is clearly used to this, and they’ve kicked the covers off to compensate for being overwarm this lovely end-of-summer evening.
In case you’re curious, I used white gel pen on John’s pajama pants while the green Copic marker was still fresh, so the marker bled through a little making the pattern light green on dark rather than a stark white. Sherlock’s stripes are bright blue pen on lighter blue background. It’s the little things that amuse me.
