Tentacle Deeps 44
Tuesday, December 4th, 2012
More tentacles! More shiny paint! It must be Tuesday. I used three different paints here with very subtle effects to the camera, but that are quite obvious to the naked eye. The first was the background in a green that blends into the green paper until the light shifts and it becomes a bright gold. Then the tentacles are in two different shades that turn from green to bronze, different shades and different angles, but almost match.
The overall effect is mysterious and ancient, hinting at tarnished bronzes or possibly green tentacles covered in iridescent slime as they rise up through the golden sunlight, seeking who knows what.
Tentacle Deeps 44, 4″x6″ duochrome watercolor on green Crane & Co. paper.
At most angles, I got the tentacles as all green or all bronze, but here you can see how the front layer is green and the back set bronze, and the background turns a warm, bright gold. Below, you can see it in its frame, ready to grace your bookshelf, desk, or wall.

Random Tentacle
Sunday, November 4th, 2012
I was working on the purple for Tuesday’s tentacles, and I did this little sketch on my scratch paper to see how the paint would flow and decide if it was too dark. I liked it so much I scanned it to share with you — the original’s about an inch and a half high, so you’re seeing it rather larger here.
Happy Sunday!

Tentacle Deeps 43
Tuesday, October 30th, 2012
Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water(color)! I never quite know when I’m going to be done with this series, but apparently it’s not just yet. This is definitely another step in the girly direction for the tentacles, with shimmery purple, duochrome pink and green. Even the paper is a lovely soft green cardstock from Crane & Co.
The spirals in the background are very subtle, the green-gold hard to see except in the right light, but I like the way they float up off the page like bubbles.

Above you can see the shimmer of purple in the pink, and gold in the green spirals, not to mention the sheen on the purple tentacles. Below, it’s in its frame, waiting to bring a strange beauty to someone’s life.

Tentacle Bookmark 4
Tuesday, October 23rd, 2012
Sharpie tentacles take on a violet sheen when they wind their way up over the mottled background in iridescent garnet. This petite bookmark is perfect for paperbacks, or just staring aimlessly at its shimmery surface until you feel inspired to write like Lovecraft.
Tentacle Bookmark 4, 1″x4″ watercolor and Sharpie marker on cardstock, nfs (sold).
Above, you can see a bit of sparkle where the light hits the tentacles just so. Below, the bookmark is hanging out with a book for you to appreciate its compactness.

Well Met
Tuesday, October 16th, 2012
Wiggly, wobbly tentacles spiral up from the bottom of this strangely iridescent mauve background, only to find another of their kind reaching down from above. There’s a certain Halloweenish whimsy to this piece that I find very appealing.
Well Met, 9″x7″ watercolor on watercolor paper.
Above, you can see a bit of the subtle shimmer of the iridescent background. Below, you can see the piece tucked neatly into an 8″x10″ frame.

Tentacle Spiral 4
Tuesday, October 9th, 2012
Every time I do a new piece to this series, I get confused about whether it’s Tentacle Spiral or Tentacle Spirals. For the record, there’s no s on the end, just to be extra confusing.
This one’s clearly influenced by my watching ofA Nightmare Before Christmas this week (twice). The tentacles spiral in from all sides to obscure the golden harvest moon. I went and carried the black paint out over the black paper so there was better continuity between it and the tentacles, which makes it extra velvety-dark in the background portions.
Tentacle Spiral 4, 5″x5″ watercolor on paper, nfs (sold).
Above, you can see the delicate curls of black coming to obscure the yellow moon. Below, the piece is lurking in a frame to show you the size, just perfect for a desk or that little bit of wall in that one hallway that’s too small for anything else. You know the one I mean.

Tentacles at the Book Shop
Tuesday, October 2nd, 2012
Tentacle Tuesday is all about the Book Shop! For the month of October, my Tentacle Deeps are gracing their window display, complete with skeleton string lights and spooky garland bats. I couldn’t resist Halloweening it up for October, and hopefully my creepy tentacles will be just what they need to keep the spirit of the season.
If you’re in the area, go take a look! The tentacles don’t get out nearly enough, and they’d love to make new friends.
