John Watson by Amy Crook

John Watson by Amy Crook

During the opening of the first episode of the BBC’s new Sherlock, there’s a scene of John Watson sitting, back straight, staring blankly out into the darkness of the room. I wanted to try to capture that moment here, and so I found some screencaps and drew up this rather detailed sketch.

It’s funny how many little details it takes to make a person recognizable — after the first draft, I scanned the sketch and laid it over the original screencap in Photoshop and looked at all the little places that needed to change. The curve of the nose and chin, the angle of the lines of the forehead, the placement of this shadow and that highlight — nothing big, but once I went through and made the changes, the drawing coalesced from ‘a random guy staring off into space’ and into what, at least to me, is recognizably John (as played by Martin Freeman).

I admit I cheated a little when I scanned him in the second time and gave him a much bigger expanse of space to stare aimlessly off into than he has in my sketchbook (not to mention cleaning up all the finger-smudges in the white). I wanted to give a sense of how the image was in the show, which was incredibly well-shot with gorgeous composition and cinematography throughout.

Ghost + Heart by Amy Crook

Ghost + Heart by Amy Crook

My spooky ghost is another of the new illustrations for my Monster Heart Coloring Book. I decided to reverse color him, giving him a subtle blue glow around his edges and then fading to darkness out to the margins of the paper. I haven’t made him into a Valentine, though, so if you want to take him home, you’ll have to just get the original.

Ghost and Ghost’s Heart, both 5″x7″ pen and ink and Copic markers on watercolor paper. $129 for the pair in a double frame, with free shipping.

Super Cute Squid sketch by Amy Crook

Super Cute Squid sketch by Amy Crook

This little cutie is an experiment in taking the cute squids I usually draw all the way to extra super awesomely cute. His chubby little tentacles and tiny, beadlike eyes just make me want to hug him!

You’ll probably see him again once I’ve taken the time to finish him, maybe as vector art rather than by hand, just for variety.

Window of Art by Amy Crook at The Book Shop

Window of Art by Amy Crook at The Book Shop

As a rule I rarely show my art, but over the next few years I’m hoping to change that, and I’m starting with this month-long window display at The Book Shop in Hayward, CA. If you live in the SF Bay Area, you can go visit my art in public at 1007 B Street all through the month of February.

You can even come meet me on Saturday, February 12 in the early afternoon! I’ll be loitering around the shop pretending I don’t want to take all the books home for a few hours.

Now that the window display is up, I can turn my attention to other things, like finishing up my snazzy new art shop here on the site, and making more, new art.

Hatbox 3

Tentacle Hatbox by Amy Crook

The third and largest of my 3 repainted hatboxes, this one got the tentacle treatment. I’m quite pleased with the way they writhe upward when it’s a platform, but slither down from the black lid when the box is flipped and assembled. I’ll be using these in my window display to give some height to the art, since most of the pieces are quite small.

Cthulhu + Heart by Amy Crook

Cthulhu + Heart by Amy Crook

Cthulhu has brought you a bouquet of cultists! He just wants to be loved, see how he’s baring his heart for you?

This is another of the new illustrations for my Monster Heart Coloring Book. I couldn’t resist putting a Cthulhu in, and of course he’s also available as a Valentine.

Cthulhu 3 and Cthulhu’s Heart, both 5″x7″ pen and ink and Copic markers on watercolor paper.

Goth Hatbox by Amy Crook

Still working hard on display bits for my window. After covering the horrifying cabbage roses with black, this one got a dose of white oil paint Sharpie. I had originally planned on skulls, but I decided on a more decorative theme, mainly because they’re being used upside-down in the window, but will be displayed right-side-up with their (now plain black) lids once I get them home.
