Do Not Bend says Dr. Watson! sketch by Amy Crook

Do Not Bend says Dr. Watson!
sketch by Amy Crook

John is determinedly guarding a package of greeting cards being sent all the way to New Zealand above, and below Sherlock’s adding in an unusual two cents indeed and saying thanks to the buyer.

Yes, John made him do it.

Giant Rats 16: Don’t You See?

"Do you see, John?" - a Sherlock comic by Amy Crook

“Do you see, John?” – a Sherlock comic by Amy Crook

For a few months now I’ve been contemplating the idea of doing a larger work with the Gorey-style shading, taking Sherlock and his Watson on an adventure that I could later put into a short book or something. Apparently, the first step on that path wasn’t deciding on a story or doing thumbnails, but instead drawing a random panel that might or might not fit in the middle, with a cute little one-shot joke.

If I do actually get far enough into the project it seems like it’ll finish (never a guarantee, heh), then I’ll want the originals to be Kickstarter incentives for printing a run of little books, I think, so this one won’t be for sale just yet.

“Don’t you see, John?” Sherlock comic, 7″x5″ pen and ink on paper.

These are the smaller size from my B is for Baker Street series, the art itself is 5″x3″ on the 7″x5″ paper, whereas the original four character drawings are 7″x5″ including the text, on a larger 8.5″x5.5″ sheet of paper. These are much easier to frame, and easier to finish as well with significantly fewer square inches of white space to be crosshatched in masochistic detail.

So, what do you think? Would you want a little Sherlock book, perhaps The Giant Rats of Sumatra?

Troll Sketch

Troll sketch by Amy Crook

Troll sketch by Amy Crook

This little sketch was an experiment with a different style than my usual, and I’m rather pleased with the way he came out. I’m also amused that the scan is probably twice as big as the original, which is quite tiny in my little sketchbook.

Mycroft & His Brolly

Mycroft and His Brolly cartoon by Amy Crook

Mycroft and His Brolly cartoon by Amy Crook

This absurd little sketch was actually by request. Someone asked for a drawing of “Mycroft cuddling his umbrella, wearing matching pyjamas,” which was just so silly I couldn’t resist! And yes, of course those are umbrellas on their matching pjs, what else would they be?

Fairy Godmother Cartoon

Fairy Godmother commission by Amy Crook

Fairy Godmother commission by Amy Crook

I’ve been working with Jo Van Every to create some illustrations she can use in her lectures and with her clients, and this generous lady is one of them. She wanted a fairy godmother to help people doing grant proposals and other academic career thinking to really sit down and wish for whatever they could possibly want, to help un-limit their thinking. We made sure the bag was separate so she can use it for exercises by itself, too, and she’s even got a version that’s just black and white for people to use as a coloring book page.

Cool, huh?

This is what Jo had to say about her illustration:

“I help social science and humanities academics with grant proposals, individually and in workshops. Unlike scientists, humanities profs often have difficulty figuring out what they need the money for. Their frugality muscles are pretty well developed and they sometimes get stuck in a loop where they can’t imagine even asking for more money because they aren’t sure they can justify that. For a recent workshop I asked Amy if she could do a Fairy Godmother that I could use in an exercise to get them thinking about money. Fairy Godmothers don’t ask you to write proposals and justify your budget. They just grant you money, though sometimes they have rules about using it by midnight or whatever. I put different sums of money on cards in a bag and got each small group to pick a number out of the bag and then brainstorm all the research they could do if the Fairy Godmother granted them that amount. Now I use it with individual clients, too. I encourage them to try different numbers on that loot bag and dream.

“The magic thing about a Fairy Godmother is that once you’ve played with just being granted this amount of money, it’s easier to work on the piece where you make a case for how important this work is and justify spending that much money.”

Jo Van Every

Dramatic, Sherlock art by Amy Crook

“If you’re quite done with the dramatic poses, there is a case, you know.”
Dramatic, Sherlock art by Amy Crook

This one’s actually based on a bit in the second episode of Series 2, The Hounds of Baskerville. There’s a point at which Sherlock is up on a windy promontory, looking over the moors, with John down below waiting patiently for him to stop enjoying the way his coat looks blowing in the breeze.

He does so love to be dramatic.

Above you can see the strange clouds and impatient John with Sherlock off in the distance, framing a perfectly boring dime. Below, it’s temporarily in the same 8″x10″ frame you’ll have grown used to seeing this week, for scale.

Sharpie Week: Golden Snitch

Sharpie Golden Snitch sketch by Amy Crook

Sharpie Golden Snitch sketch by Amy Crook

My house guest has flown back to DC, and I’ve got one more day of vacation plans before it’s back to the grind. Actually there’ll be a little grind today, since I’ve got a teleclass, but we’re pretending that’s just not the case at the moment. Much like how we’re pretending that the above Snitch is actually round.

Also, my cats say hi, and want you to know that I’m never allowed to leave the house again.
