Cthulhu Dreams of Love by Amy Crook

Cthulhu Dreams of Love by Amy Crook

Cthulhu gets a Valentine! Of course his love-dreams could be for a birthday, anniversary or just because, but it’s that season and I drew him with that in mind.

That said, my favorite part is the button-eyed Hound of Tindalos plush toy. He’s holding its paw! Aww, Cthulhu, we never knew you were such a softie.

Tentacle Spiral 1

Tentacle Spiral 1 by Amy Crook

Tentacle Spiral 1 by Amy Crook

I was mucking about with washes, and I thought I’d do something a little different with this pale, almost flesh-toned wash I did on one of my last blank handmade postcards from India. The lunar black paint made exquisite textures as it granulated and pooled in the surface of the card, giving the tentacles a half-real feeling.

I like this effect with the tentacles spiralling in from all sides, so I’ve optimistically called this #1 in the hopes that I manage a series out of it.

Tentacle Spiral 1, 6″x4″ watercolor on handmade postcard.

I took a close-up of one of the spirals so you can really see the texture.

Cthulhu with a Kitten sketch by Amy Crook

Cthulhu with a Kitten sketch by Amy Crook

Another little Coloring Book doodle! Cthulhu is quite dubious that he’s not supposed to eat the kitten, but I’m sure he’ll come around.

Happy New Year!

Tentacle Deeps 23 watercolor by Amy Crook

Tentacle Deeps 23 by Amy Crook

It’s the ghost of tentacles past! Or possibly tentacles future. Who can tell.

There’s a subtle blue-violet tint to the background on this piece that comes through where the white paint picked up the background color.

M is for Mycroft drawing by Amy Crook

M is for Mycroft by Amy Crook

The wonderful person who bought my other two Baker Street Tinies Edward Gorey/Sherlock pastiche pieces decided her collection wasn’t complete without Mycroft Holmes and DI Lestrade in the mix. This is the first of two more images she’s commissioned to match the first two, with yet more painstaking crosshatching. Mycroft takes directly after E is for Ernest in the original books, though the bell has become a Blackberry, and his faithful umbrella snuck its way into the picture.

I highly recommend clicking to see the image larger, if only so you can appreciate my absurdly painstaking work. Once Lestrade is done, I’ll have cards and prints available in my Etsy shop.

M is for Mycroft, 8.5″x5.5″ pen and ink on paper, sold.

Tentacle Deeps 22

Tentacle Deeps 22 watercolor by Amy Crook

Tentacle Deeps 22 by Amy Crook

Some cheerful Christmas red tentacles for the Tuesday before! Well, all right, the shade’s a bit more bloody than Santa usually likes, but I’m not going to be the one to tell Cthulhu that.

I went with a very simple, stylized pattern on the tentacles this time, which makes them look a bit like monster fingers, creepy scratch marks, or perhaps long, wavy hair. The surface of the tentacles is subtly textured from the granulating Lunar Black watercolor, too, and it’s even more obvious in person.

Snow Cthulhu watercolor by Amy Crook

SnowCthulhu by Amy Crook

It’s a snowman! It’s Cthulhu! It’s… SnowCthulhu!

Tiny, delicate pen work makes up the stick tentacles, arms and wings. This demanded careful, slightly messy watercolors to paint in the sticks and blue snowy shadows on him. His coal-black eyes have little hints of blue and purple in them just like real coal. Basically, he’s just awesome.

He may or may not become a holiday card this year, but he’ll definitely star in next year’s lineup. I was just feeling seasonal! And, you know, Lovecraftian. Because Christmas and unspeakable horrors just go together.
