GrumpySherlock cartoon by Amy Crook

GrumpySherlock cartoon by Amy Crook

I had a day last week when I was kept awake past my bedtime by noisy people, and awakened far before my usual time by different noisy people, and spent the entire day feeling very grumpy indeed. So, I cheered myself up with this — note the Grumpycat-like shading around his eyes and mouth, especially.

GrumpySherlock, 5″x7″ pen & ink and Copic marker on paper, nfs (sold). But Grumpy Sherlock can now grace your gifts with these very cranky tags.

Sherlock Birthday

Sherlock Birthday cartoon by Amy Crook

“The fact of your birth isn’t so much cause for celebration as a biological coincidence –“
“He means, ‘Happy Birthday.'”
Sherlock Birthday cartoon by Amy Crook

Yes, it’s birthday card time here on my art table — there’s a Doctor Who one coming up next week, too. In this case I drew Sherlock in his infamous purple shirt, John in his cute oatmeal sweater, and John’s elbow not quite making it into Sherlock’s ribs to shut him up. I can just feel John gritting his teeth as he tries to cover for Sherlock’s faux pas (again).

Sherlock Birthday, 5″x7″ pen & ink and Copic marker on paper, nfs (sold), but you can buy a birthday card on Etsy.

Oin Birthday

Oin Birthday cartoon by Amy Crook

“Don’t get your beard in a twist.
It’s just another birthday.”
Oin Birthday cartoon by Amy Crook

There’s something really fun about drawing parody dwarves, especially knowing there’s 13 of them to draw. Oin, brother of Gloin, is a rather old and cranky dwarf and a bit hard of hearing. He’s got a couple of hundred years on you and is therefore completely unimpressed with your angst about that big birthday milestone.

I made this for sort of an anti-over-the-hill card, because sometimes I get tired of hearing people worrying about turning 30, 40, 50, or whatever. Also, grumpy dwarf. Okay, mostly for the grumpy dwarf.

Oin Birthday, 5″x7″ pen & ink and Copic marker on paper, nfs (sold), but you can get him on a card in my Etsy shop.

The Brothers Holmes Bonus Comics

The Brothers Holmes, Bonus Comic 1, by Amy Crook

The Brothers Holmes, Bonus Comic 1, by Amy Crook

In talking to the person who originally commissioned The Brothers Holmes comics, we found two little snippets from other peoples’ stories that inspired her to ask for me to add a pair of color bonus comics to the series. Above, we have a 3-year-old Sherlock in the midst of an obsession with xylophones, and poor Mycroft trying to be all grown up at 10.

Below, you can see that 8-year-old Sherlock’s heard a Monster in the tree that hides his box of treasures, and he’s relying on his big brother Mycroft, now 15, to rescue his things.

Further Adventures of Otter & Hedgehog

Floating Nap, dorky fan art by Amy Crook

Floating Nap, dorky fan art by Amy Crook

Another week, another piece of adorable otter/hedgehog art. I imagine this is the missing bit between the first two pieces, after the hedgehog got tired of swimming but before they dried off and curled up in their scarves to nap.

I imagine this because I’m a big dorky fangirl, and I enjoy it.

Red 3

Red 3, abstract watercolor by Amy Crook

Red 3, 7″x5″ abstract watercolor by Amy Crook

This piece is all about courting chaos. I made some artistic choices at the start, and then once it got to a certain point, I stood back and let the process take over, making it a weird collaboration between artist and entropy. There’s an amazing wealth of detail and nuance in the way the paint, paper, and water interacted as they dried. I considered doing something more with it, like tentacles or tiny fandom, but I didn’t want to cover up all that lovely nuance.

Above, you can see the upper lefthand corner in detail, the way the different colors flowed and pooled and settled as the paint dried in one of the wettest parts of the painting. Below, the painting is hanging out with my iPhone, making it look cool.

No One Fights Like Thorin

No One Fights Like Thorin,
a Hobbit/Beauty and the Beast parody cartoon by Amy Crook

I’m not sure at what point I equated the dwarves’ invasion of Bag End with Gaston’s proposal to Belle, muddy boots and all, but this is the result. This, and having that song about Gaston in my head for days, that is.

I used google to find a good image of Gaston with his boots up. Poor Bilbo, he looks as dismayed about Great-Grandmother Baggins’ table-runner as Belle did about her book.

Gaston proposes to Belle

Above, you can see the original scene of which mine is merely a parody. Below, you can see a totally random close-up of Thorin’s muddy boots.

“…Then goes tromping around wearing boots like Thorin!”

No One Fights Like Thorin, 7″x5″ pen & ink and Copic marker on paper, nfs (sold).
