There’s a Little Black Spot on the Sun Today by Amy Crook

There’s a Little Black Spot on the Sun Today,
6″x6″ ink and Primatek watercolor on Fluid watercolor paper

As you can see, mineral paints were a theme for this month! Fall in love with granulation all over again, the magical texture you get with certain pigments, watery paint, and rough paper.

A ruined city lurks below the apocalyptic sky, tendrils of smoke rising from the burnt-out buildings. There’s a little black spot on the sun, which glows a sullen red and drips something like light.

(It’s my soul up there.)

I’d apologize for the earworm, but I’m not sorry.
It’s the same old thing as yesterday, really.

Above, you can see the dripping circle of the red sun and its odd black spot against the beautiful texture of grey-blue sky. Below, this little post-apocalyptic wasteland is tucked into a frame, a gorgeous reminder of a future that never was.

Ullage, word art by Amy Crook

Ullage: the amount that a vessel lacks being full
5″x7″ brush & ink and Primatek watercolor on paper – $45

This past Wednesday’s word is actually a term from beer and winemaking, yum! A cask or bottle of wine or beer requires a certain amount of ullage in order for the little yeasties to do the fermenting, but too much and you’ve shorted your measure.

I still wanted to bring that whole “glass half empty” metaphor into it, at least visually, so I went for a glass rather than a bottle or cask. I painted this whole thing live on Persicope; come join me some Wednesday around 2-3pm Pacific.

In the meantime, I hope your glass is just as full as you want it to be, of whatever suits!

Blowfish

Blowfish by Amy Crook

Blowfish by Amy Crook

My love affair with colors my scanner hates continues! This lovely creature is painted in two shades of purple ink, with bonus black in the eyes and the same rich teal for irises as the water she’s swimming through.

This ink wash blowfish is just adorable. She only wants to be left alone! I’m sure she’ll calm down and make friends once she knows you’re not out to eat her for dinner.

Those spines would be hard on the gullet, anyway. Ow.

Cheshire Catnap by Amy Crook

Cheshire Catnap by Amy Crook

Caturday is the perfect day to give yourself a catnap.

This fuzzy Cheshire Cat is just in it for the naps, much like every other cat I’ve ever met. His floof has floof, and one can only imagine the grin on him when he’s awake.

Where do you need a little bit of wonderland in your life? This kitty would be great in a bedroom or nursery, soothing someone to join him in sleep.

Purr.

Blood Moon 6

Blood Moon 6 by Amy Crook

Blood Moon 6 by Amy Crook

This ink wash is a vivid addition to my City series, which is also the 6th of my Blood Moon paintings.

The blood moon glows with a rich red-gold radiance. The sky is home to a thousand glittering golden stars in halo around it. A dark city awaits below, reflecting the glow of them both.

Built in layers, this piece was first a wash of red and gold inks, and then a globe of light in the middle of gold-dusted night, and finally became a city. Each layer is a different kind of ink, even the gold dust.

Above, you can see the shimmering gold dust in the Stormy Grey ink, and the solid Deleter Manga ink that blacks it out where the buildings rise up, with the beautiful red shining through both where appropriate. Below, you can see the piece in a frame, waiting to grace your walls with its eerie beauty.

Word Art, week 4+2

Monday, November 30th, 2015

November’s over, and I won at NaNoWriMo, hooray! I even managed a piece of word art every day through flu and freezing cold and fickle cats trying to sleep on my hands while I typed. So yay for finished projects!

I have had an inquiry about making a booklet of these — what do you think? Would you want a handmade book of weird words? It would be a lot of work to scan and format and print, but it might be fun to have the project preserved for posterity.

Word Art, week 3

Sunday, November 22nd, 2015

The days keep flying by, especially this week! I was sick and sleepy and pathetic, so I chose a lot of easy words. I’m feeling better now, though, and hope to get caught up on my NaNoWriMo words tonight (I’m about half a day behind now, a 100-word day really eats your lead).

Enjoy 7 new words – which one are you going to keep in your lexicon?
