What What What, Doctor Who fan art by Amy Crook

What What What, Doctor Who fan art by Amy Crook

After making the Eleventh Doctor’s holiday card art, I had to do something with Ten. The darling Tara Swiger suggested the idea for the text, “What? What? No! What?” on the outside of the card, and inside it says, “It’s Christmas already?”

I also decided to draw the other side of the TARDIS on this one, just for variety, but then there was a magical result — the two images together had two Doctors with one TARDIS between them!

Thinking in Grey

Thinking in Grey, Sherlock fan art by Amy Crook

Thinking in Grey, Sherlock fan art by Amy Crook

Copic markers have four kinds of grey — warm, cool, neutral and toner. I used warm and cool greys to put in all shading here, giving the whole image a muted effect like an old photo. You might recognize the pose from last week’s bookmark, which was sort of practice for this bigger piece, though of course I widened the view quite a bit.

Cartoon: Jo VanEvery

Jo VanEvery cartoon by Amy Crook

Jo VanEvery cartoon by Amy Crook

After the delightful Jo VanEvery got several cartoons from me to use in her work, she’s finally let me cartoon her! We chose a favorite sweater of hers, and the cheerful galoshes she wishes she had, and then added in one of the pigs she raises on their farm and the new lantern logo I created for her site. Or a reasonable facsimile, at least.

I think the galoshes are my favorite part.

If you’d like to be a cartoon, too, check out my page and let me know what item you’ve always wanted. It seems I end up drawing a lot of wished-for (and favourite) shoes!

Santa Hats Are Cool, Doctor Who parody art by Amy Crook

Santa Hats Are Cool, Doctor Who parody art by Amy Crook

The eleventh Doctor is very proud of his new headgear. Let’s hope this one survives more than five minutes before getting destroyed.

Santa Hats Are Cool, 5″x7″ pen & ink and Copic markers on paper, nfs (sold).

You can still get him on a holiday card at my Etsy shop.

Sherlock Discovers Bubble Tea, colored

Sherlock Discovers Bubble Tea comic by Amy Crook

Sherlock Discovers Bubble Tea comic by Amy Crook
now with bonus color!

After an inking mishap with this comic required some Photoshop love to make it workable, I put it away in a drawer sad for its fate. Then I decided to try to color it anyway, and through the magic of pinstripes you can’t tell where I mis-inked it at all, yay! I decided to do Sherlock’s clothes in cool blue and give Mycroft a nice warm yellow shirt and golden tie, which goes well with the warm brown tapioca ball stuck to his forehead.

Sherlocktopus

Sherlocktopus cartoon by Amy Crook

The Wily Sherlocktopus in His Natural Habitat
cartoon by Amy Crook

There’s a fandom trope where Sherlock, who is both offputting and always up in John’s space in the show, is one of those sleepers who wraps around his bedmate like an octopus and never lets go. Poor John is clearly used to this, and they’ve kicked the covers off to compensate for being overwarm this lovely end-of-summer evening.

In case you’re curious, I used white gel pen on John’s pajama pants while the green Copic marker was still fresh, so the marker bled through a little making the pattern light green on dark rather than a stark white. Sherlock’s stripes are bright blue pen on lighter blue background. It’s the little things that amuse me.

H is for Heraldry

H is for Heraldry, calligraphic illumination by Amy Crook

H is for Heraldry, calligraphic illumination by Amy Crook

I have to admit, when deciding on the colors and symbols for this letter with the help of Google, I also enlisted certain fannish friends. That’s how I ended up with Hedgehog Rampant and Otter Rampant as the creatures, making the H secret fan art on top of everything else.

The symbology of the elements of this particular shield are, at least according to Google and artistic intention (which I’m given to understand the latter is more important, anyway):

  • Gold/Yellow (Or): generosity
  • Blue (Azure): strength, loyalty
  • Black (Sable): constancy, grief
  • Chevron on the shield: protection, faithful service
  • Otter: one who lives life to the fullest
  • Hedgehog: provident provider
  • Arrows: military readiness
  • Holly: truth

H is for Heraldry, 5″x5″ mixed media on paper, nfs (sold). If you’d like an H of your own, you can find out how to commission one here.

Although the glitter looks a bit anemic in the scan, when it catches the light it’s really a lovely bright gold with a nice layer of golden yellow beneath it to add richness. Below, you can see how it looks framed and hanging out on my bookshelf with a little sneak preview of next week’s letter. (HI!)
