Once again I was struck with a phrase in the middle of insomnia though this one isn’t a quote that I know of. I wrote it up on my white board and it lurked there for a few weeks until I had a chance to try it out with the same pen-and-watercolor technique as I used for A Circle in Time. I deliberately let the watercolor pool down at the bottom of the page so that it was still damp when I wrote the second line, but dry up top so the first line is clear.

As a child, I was often faced with a dire lack of new books to read, so I taught myself to forget the details and endings of books so there was still a sense of adventure when I read them over again later. I often keep whole worlds of detail in my head about other things, however, though the older I get, the less I’m able to stuff new information in without losing track of some of what was already there.

Zombie Bride

This lovely lady is another one of the bonus zombies from my Cthulhu Coloring Book. I decided to go for a more blue-toned dead (rather than grey or green), sort of an homage to The Corpse Bride. I had fun adding in some extra details with the coloring, like the bloody handprint on her dress.

This happy little guy is just trying to keep warm. Someone knit him a lovely set of mittens for all his tentacles, and a matching hat. I decided that, since they don’t really have thumbs, squid mittens should just be called squittens. Also, it’s really fun to say.

Goth Christmas Tree

It’s that time of year, and I’ve been working on holiday card designs. In addition to my usual stock of Lovecraftian horrors, I decided to do a cheerfully morbid Christmas tree. Skulls adorn the branches and it’s topped with an eye-tipped vine. There’s a bloodstained package among the gifts under the tree, and the curly, swirly, tentacle-ish branches are reaching down to help distribute them.

When Jo VanEvery came to me asking if I would help create an illustration for her presentation in November, I was excited to draw something new. We went back and forth on just what a gremlin looked like, and we ended up with this little green guy whispering wicked self-doubt into the ear of his human.
This naughty boy likes to undermine his human’s confidence and sow the seeds of indecision, especially in grad students.

This morbid fellow is another one of the bonus zombies from my Cthulhu coloring book. I originally had drawn a bunch of these guys for another purpose, but somehow they never got finished until I needed them for the coloring book. Still, I do love the details on this one, from his missing arm to the skull logo on his shoe.
