Bonus Weeble: Sherlock & John

Weeble John and Sherlock by Amy Crook

Weeble John and Sherlock by Amy Crook

Since I’ve been drawing Sherlock, I figured it was high time I also gave John a go, not to mention time to Weeble-ify the pair of them. These guys were complicated! That textured wooly weave on Sherlock’s coat took forever, and I spent a long time watching episode 2 trying to get a good look on the exact arrangement of pockets and patches on John’s jacket. Such torment, I know.

It being cartoons, I exaggerated the height difference (5.5″ in real life), and gave weeble Sherlock a thinner build than my usual weebles while drawing John Watson as dead average. It amused me to find out when I looked it up that the actor’s actually an inch shorter than me! John’s sweater was the perfect thing to use my “warm grey” markers on, where Sherlock’s done all in cool greys. Sherlock’s skin is the palest of the skin tones I have, where John got a much warmer, pinker hue, to reflect his home-from-Afghanistan tan.

Ironically, I think this is the most recognizably Sherlock of the 3 drawings I’ve done of him. Cartoons are always easier. (And you know, if you’d like to Be a Cartoon, they’re still available!)

Weeble John and Sherlock, 7.5″x6.5″ pen and ink and Copic markers on sketchbook paper, not for sale.

Weeble Wednesday: Dracula

Dracula + Heart by Amy Crook

Dracula + Heart by Amy Crook

Today I’ve got a weeble close to my own heart, the classic Bela Lugosi’s Dracula — and his heart, of course. I even tried to copy Bela’s classic hand gestures with the stubby weeble fingers, to what I think are pretty amusing results. He’s got a swishy cape and a charming grin to show you how much he adores you.

You can color him yourself my new Monster Heart Coloring Book, get him on a handmade greeting card at Etsy, or buy the originals, below. Take home an adorably classic movie monster today!

Dracula and Dracula’s Heart, both 5″x7″ pen and ink and Copic markers on watercolor paper. $129 for the pair in a double frame, with free shipping.

Monster Heart Coloring Book

Monster Heart Coloring Book, front + inside, by Amy Crook

Monster Heart Coloring Book, front + inside, by Amy Crook

The perfect gift for the horror-loving Valentine in your life — a Monster Heart Coloring Book. Each monster is presented with his heart on the opposite page, from Frankenstein’s Monster’s stitched-together heart to the Mummy’s bandage-wrapped one. And as a bonus, a few of the monsters have brides! Dracula, modeled after the very classic performance by Bela Lugosi, even has a trio of his brides.

My Cthulhu Coloring Books got great reviews last year, so I decided to put out something special for Valentine’s day. This one’s a little longer, with 4 extra illustrations, and there’s all-new art including a Zombie and a brand-new Cthulhu.

Check out the Monster Heart Coloring Book at my Etsy shop – it’s sure to make you smile.

Weeble Wednesday: The Mummy

The Mummy + Heart by Amy Crook

The Mummy + Heart by Amy Crook

I got laid up yesterday by illness and missed my 2nd art post of the new year! Not the best way to begin, but there wasn’t much else I could do. Still not feeling my best, but I got my new coloring books done!

Today I have the fully-colored Mummy illustration from my new Monster Heart Coloring Book. He was fun to color despite the simplicity, I got to use some techniques to age his bandages without making him totally yellowed. I even have a marker called “old linen” that I used.

You can get him for your mummy-loving Valentine at Etsy, or buy the original below.

The Mummy and The Mummy’s Heart, both 5″x7″ pen and ink and Copic markers on watercolor paper. $129 for the pair in a double frame, with free shipping.

Weeble Wednesday: Frankenstein’s Monster

Frankenstein's Monster + Heart by Amy Crook

Frankenstein’s Monster + Heart by Amy Crook

I colored up one of the monsters for my upcoming Monster Heart Coloring Book for next year! This is Frankenstein’s Monster, and his heart. He’s an awfully charming monster, I sort of imagine he’d say, “How you doin’?” if he could talk.

These are actually two separate pieces that go together. The coloring book will have all-new art in it, and I’m having a ton of fun with the hearts and weebles. I mean, who knew Cthulhu could make puppy eyes? But you’ll have to wait a bit to see that. 😉

Weeble Wednesday: Shoggoth

Weeble Shoggoth by Amy Crook

Weeble Shoggoth by Amy Crook

Shoggoth here is the last of my Lovecraft monsters from the Cthulhu Coloring Book, although I do still have one lonely bonus zombie yet to be colored. He’s a shapeshifting, blob-like horror, drawn on a rather grand scale when you see that he’s about to have a little snack out of the poor guy he managed to catch.

My Shoggoth design is loosely based on Mythos canon, and very influenced by the Shoggies in the webcomic Unspeakable Vault (of Doom). In fact, if you’re feeling a bit lost about all these strange monsters, that’s a great place to learn a little bit about them with a lot of humour. Personally, I learned most of it playing Arkham Horror.

Weeble Wednesday: Hound of Tindalos

Weeble Hound of Tindalos by Amy Crook

Weeble Hound of Tindalos by Amy Crook

I’ve colored my second-to-last monster from the Cthulhu Coloring Book (though there’s also one bonus zombie left)! This is the Hound of Tindalos, a Lovecraft creation who is said to stalk time travelers like a hound once it gets their scent. He can appear anywhere there is an angle of less than 120 degrees, and here he’s slipping out of a corner to play fetch with you! Clearly you would never do something so naughty as to time travel, so you have nothing to fear from this gruesomely cute beast.

If you play Arkham Horror, you already know about this guy — he’s always one of the monsters that gets an unhappy groan when he appears out of the monster cup in our group.
