Twining Snakes Volant, detail, by Amy Crook

This bright green Moleskine Volant notebook has been hand-decorated with a pair of twining snakes using Sharpie markers. A black snake is biting his own tail in a double-looped ouroboros while his green friend slithers suggestively through his loops.

Moleskine’s colorful notebooks are ideal for customization, turning the high-quality book into a work of art in which to wrap your ideas. The acid-free ruled paper is a creamy ivory color, and a delight to write on. The large size Volants have 96 pages between their soft vinyl covers. The design is in permanent Sharpie, and should last as long as the notebook it’s drawn on.

Twining Snakes, 5″x8.25″ customized Moleskine Volant notebook, $30 with free shipping. 10% of your money will go to charity, check out the sidebar to see who I’m donating to this month.

This bright green Moleskine Volant notebook has been hand-decorated with Sharpie marker, this time with a happy little froggie just chilling on his lily pad. He’s got three flies buzzing above, perhaps ideas he’s going to take into himself when he gets the urge?

Cthulhu Egg

Cthulhu Egg by Amy Crook

Cthulhu Egg by Amy Crook

I wanted to make some Easter-ish cards this year, but I found myself resisting the idea of hearts and flowers and happy little bunnies. So, after doing a more standard Easter egg sort of card, I allowed myself to do something a little more to my own tastes.

This image is extremely loosely based on the works of HP Lovecraft, and the horrific Elder God Cthulhu, who waits and slumbers in R’lyeh, down under the vasty deeps. Mostly it’s just a little tentacle monster hatching to give someone an unpleasant surprise.

Cthulhu Egg, 4″x6″ watercolor on a watercolor postcard, sold.

I’ve made prints available as greeting cards for $5 over at Etsy.

My Heart Bleeds

My Heart Bleeds by Amy Crook

My Heart Bleeds by Amy Crook

This rather morbid watercolor was one of my unValentines this year, a cross between a tradition and realistic heart. The blood red paint dried in thick pools and was allowed to drip naturally, nearly to the bottom of the card — in its frame, the chrome picks up the reflection as it disappears at the bottom edge. Blue veins call to mind a real heart as they trace across the surface.

The frame and shipping are both free, and starting today I’m donating 10% of all art and Etsy sales to charity, so your money will go to support the arts and another good cause. I’ll be changing the charity regularly, but I’ve decided to start out with Kiva for April and May.

My Heart Bleeds, watercolor on watercolor postcard, 4″x6″, $69 with free shipping. 10% of your money will go to charity, check out the sidebar to see who I’m donating to this month!

Want it on a t-shirt instead? Check out the swag at Cafepress.

Romantic Gesture

Romantic Gesture by Amy Crook

Romantic Gesture by Amy Crook

The most romantic gesture of all: the gift of a unique flower that lasts all year long. This beautiful monoprint features an abstract rose that spills over the sides of the page. This print is totally unique: there will never be another quite like it. Perfect for the art-loving valentine in your life.

This one-of-a-kind piece of art was created with a unique process called monoprinting. Thick water-based inks are painted onto a blank acrylic printing plate, and then run through a printing press to transfer them to thick archival paper. It’s very similar to the way an etching is hand-pulled, but in this case there is only one copy created, since the original painting vanishes when the inks transfer to the paper. The process is a mix of deliberate art and random elements, since a measure of the texture is lost when the wet paper contacts the water-based inks, absorbing them in a slightly different manner every time.

The printing plate in this case was 2″x6″, printed onto a larger 8″x11″ sheet of paper. The second photo shows the way the plate was framed, to draw the viewer’s eye and imagination toward the place where the rose exits the image, allowing them to fill in the rest of the rosebud, to conjure their own image what exists beyond the tiny slice of sky and leaf and stem.

Romantic Gesture, monoprint on watercolor paper, 8″x11″, $399 with free shipping. $40 of your money will go to charity, check out the sidebar to see who I’m donating to this month.

My Funny Valentines – Unique Cards

4 Valentines by Amy Crook

4 Valentines by Amy Crook

I’m not a huge fan of all the hype surrounding Valentine’s Day. That said, I’ve always really liked the sentiment behind it. The idea of really appreciating the people that you love is a wonderful one, and a worthwhile effort. Also, it gives me the chance to design cards! This year I’ve designed four cards for four types of people: the art lover, the busy person, the geek, and the goth.

I get inspiration for these cards from the strangest places sometimes. The “Busy Valentine” card is based on a sticky note that went through the wash, an image that stayed with me even though the writing faded. The unValentine hearkens back to my old days of black lace and silver skulls. All of the cards represent a unique perspective on the holiday. Each card is blank on the inside, so you can write the perfect message for that person that you love.

Valentines, printed on watercolor cards, 5″x7″, $5 each with free shipping. 10% of your money will go to charity, check out the sidebar to see who I’m donating to this month!
