Old-Fashioned Christmas Ornaments by Amy Crook
I participated in a handmade ornament exchange this year, and I decided to play to my strengths and make paper ornaments. I drew the original art myself, then printed it out both normally and flipped onto card stock so I could use spray-glue to make these double-sided ornaments. They were cut and hole-punched by hand, a ribbon added, and sent off to my exchange partner. I thought about coloring them somehow, but I liked the old-fashioned etching feel of the black-and-white on parchment-textured card stock, so I left them as is.

M is for Mycroft

The wonderful person who bought my other two Baker Street Tinies Edward Gorey/Sherlock pastiche pieces decided her collection wasn’t complete without Mycroft Holmes and DI Lestrade in the mix. This is the first of two more images she’s commissioned to match the first two, with yet more painstaking crosshatching. Mycroft takes directly after E is for Ernest in the original books, though the bell has become a Blackberry, and his faithful umbrella snuck its way into the picture.
I highly recommend clicking to see the image larger, if only so you can appreciate my absurdly painstaking work. Once Lestrade is done, I’ll have cards and prints available in my Etsy shop.

Some cheerful Christmas red tentacles for the Tuesday before! Well, all right, the shade’s a bit more bloody than Santa usually likes, but I’m not going to be the one to tell Cthulhu that.
I went with a very simple, stylized pattern on the tentacles this time, which makes them look a bit like monster fingers, creepy scratch marks, or perhaps long, wavy hair. The surface of the tentacles is subtly textured from the granulating Lunar Black watercolor, too, and it’s even more obvious in person.

Zen Blue Cup

No optimists or pessimists here, this cup’s always full. In the same set as yesterday’s crimson, I have this amazing clear teal that my scanner absolutely refuses to pick up properly, so it comes out more of a royal blue. I used the same black to create the nice dark shadow to contrast with the shine on this simple blue cup. I’m a bummed I can’t find these watercolors anywhere anymore, but I used the excuse of running low to buy myself some very nice tubes for future use.

Zen Red Bird

I was enjoying the pure, rich red pigment of one of my red Japanese watercolors, and I decided to paint something simple and zen. I added in just a touch of black for the bright eye and dark beak to create a seasonal red bird, but I think the essence of the image is in that first red swoosh down the bird’s back. It makes a good reminder to keep it simple this holiday season, and not go flying right out of the frame trying to do too much.
