Orange Face sketch by Amy Crook

Orange Face sketch by Amy Crook

This is actually a virulent orange in my wee sketchbook, but by desaturating it a little bit, you can see some of the brushstrokes that a super-bright orange hides on a monitor. I sketched this with a sumi-e brush and the orange paint leftover from making my goldfish, using the pause screen on whatever DVD I was watching as a very loose reference.

I’m pleased that, although the paper buckled some, the paint didn’t bleed through onto the next page.

Sherlock in Grey by Amy Crook

Sherlock in Grey
by Amy Crook

I wanted a tall, thin piece of Sherlock art to put on my giveaway bookmarks for my Etsy shop (sometimes I slip them into the larger orders as a freebie), and nothing I already had quite fit the bill. So, I drew this guy! He’s done with one of my nifty Japanese brush pens that’s black on one side and grey on the other — I’m always using up the black and leaving a ton of grey, so sometimes pieces like this can help me use up some of the extra. I self-indulgently drew in his red buttonhole, though I’m not sure anyone but me will notice it when it’s printed out half the size.

I also used him on my Sherlock gift tags, complete with characteristic sarcasm.

Potterly Love, cartoon by Amy Crook

Potterly Love, cartoon by Amy Crook

Is it James Potter and little Harry, or grown-up Harry and little James Sirius? In my mind it’s a little of both, James and Harry sharing a moment of fatherly love from one generation to the next. I even gave them Gryffindor-themed colors, with warm baby yellow and bright fatherly red.

I have to admit, my favorite part about drawing Harry Potter is the hair, which is always a fun, scribbly mess. Baby hair is just a little different, wispier and more staticky while being just as much of a mess as dad’s infamous mop.

Secret Bonus Post! I had one more bookmark than would fit in my usual 6-day week, so I decided to go ahead and post this one on Sunday. If you can’t read my handwriting, click the image above for a bigger version.

When I was working on this, first I drew tiny John & Sherlock, and then I decided what John was upset about. I didn’t really plan it ahead, just let the joke unfold in the space I had, then went back and fixed the typo when I inked it. I had fun drawing tiny Sherlock popping his collar like a boss.

You can see the little cartoon above with a standard hardcover book, just waiting to mark someone’s place with secret delight.

Bookmark week continues with another Sherlock Holmes!

He skulks on this black bookmark in pencil, which makes his details vanish at the wrong angle, though the graphite catches the light nicely at the right angle. I painted in his green eyes, red buttonhole and blue scarf on a whim, and I like the way those little details leap out of the page at you.

You can really see his detailing in the detail photo, above, and of course I couldn’t resist a shot of him peeking sneakily up out of a book, below.

Sherlock Says: Do Not Bend

Sometimes, just writing “please do not bend” on the back of a package just doesn’t seem enough. This time, Sherlock had his say — don’t worry, he’s hiding inside, too, so it’s not completely random. Really.
