J is for Juxtapose, calligraphic illumination by Amy Crook
I wasn’t sure how well I could manage Juxtaposition, but I’m really happy with the contrasts and superimpositions in this piece, from the colors of subtle buff titanium with bright purple and rich teal, to the way the dark purple ink outline of the neat lower J bled through into the messy top letter. The light purple glitter strips in the upper left blend very differently with the background than the dark inked spirals in the lower right, too.
J is for Juxtapose, 5″x5″ mixed media on paper, nfs (sold). If you’d like a J of your own, you can find out how to commission one here.

Above, you can see the shine of purple glitter and a close-up of many of the various overlapping styles. Below, the J is hanging out with the A, which shares a similar color scheme but a nicely different feel.

Tentacle Deeps 42, painting by Amy Crook
The stars are clearly right, because we’ve arrived at the answer! For #42 I tried another new thing this week, or really a very old thing in a new way. I broke out my acrylic paints for the background, and then drew tentacles on top with Sharpie oil paint marker. Since it’s on a gallery-wrapped canvas, the image slips around the edges, as you can see where the tentacles sneak off the left edge there.

Above you can see the way the tentacles shine with a different sort of gloss than the background, at least when exposed to the sun and an Instagram filter.

The Death of Me, 6 of 6, a Sherlock comic by Amy Crook
Poor John. It’s too early to tell if he’s caught Sherlock’s cold or if he’s just shattered from the workout he got taking care of Sherlock, but either way, he’s not ready to go much of anywhere.
I imagine if John did catch Sherlock’s cold, Sherlock would at first not care and then John would prod his ego, and Sherlock would become determined not to be outdone. Either way, hilarity would ensue!
If you’d like a print of this little comic, I’ve got them for sale here in my Etsy shop.

The Death of Me, 5 of 6, a Sherlock comic by Amy Crook
Really, what can John say to that? It’s about as close to proper appreciation as Sherlock gets, after all.

The Death of Me, 4 of 6, a Sherlock comic by Amy Crook
Mrs. Hudson’s not their housekeeper, but she couldn’t resist a bit of picking up after poor Sherlock. Look at the state he’s in, and only John to take care of him, well, the boys do need a hand once in a while.

I is for Impressionism, calligraphic illumination by Amy Crook
This one was an interesting challenge, because it’s definitely outside of my usual painting style. The first go was determined to stay firmly at the ass point, but this one came together once I gave it a little more love. I think the bright shine of silver on it is what really makes the piece.

The Death of Me, 3 of 6, a Sherlock comic by Amy Crook
Sherlock, of course, has abused John’s kindness to a rather extreme degree, littering his little corner of the flat with used teacups and tissues. And then not wanting to let John out of his sight for even five minutes! Poor John.
