Paul the Octopus, Balance the Force, and Gru Coins by Amy Crook for Mathlords

Paul the Octopus, Balance the Force, & Gru Coins
by Amy Crook for Mathlords

This odd little trio is for the same awesome client who got the Continuations art a while back. He wanted something to represent the way some systems worked within his larger project. We named the octopus Paul after the late Paul the Octopus who predicted the world cup results back in 2010. I asked Zack to explain them for you, and this is what he had to say:

“In a marketing illustration for an industrial automation system, our hardworking cephalapod Paul keeps the monies and goods flowing to the highly trained minions and lizard monkeys. Complex processes? No problem. Send down more worms and coins, Paul! These eager minions and rainbow-hued lizard monkeys handle it all with flair and elan. Any rumors that the system’s creator is a somewhat unstable polymath with limited social skills are greatly exaggerated and he asks that this fact not be weighted heavily in purchasing decisions during any ERP downselect process.”

-Zack Galler, Mathlords

We wanted some extra color, so the Hutt got greened up, and the Kowakian Monkey-Lizards were colored rather like Fraggles, plus of course Paul himself is a lovely mottling of ocean green and violet. Gru refused to be dressed up for mere commerce however.

Paul the Octopus, Balance the Force, and Gru Coins, all 7″x5″ pen & ink and Copic marker on paper.

Snowflakes, a Sherlock parody comic by Amy Crook

Snowflakes, a Sherlock parody comic by Amy Crook

John and Sherlock agreed to a festive winter evening making snowflakes. Unfortunately, they have very different ideas about how to go about that particular activity.

Whose do you think will win out?*

How Many Minions, parody comic by Amy Crook

How many Minions does it take? Who knows, these six haven’t even managed it yet, though the one on top is shining like a proper Christmas star, having lifted his whole tree of support off the ground below.

You can get these silly Minions on a card at my Etsy shop.

No Hugs, Doctor Who parody art by Amy Crook

No Hugs, Doctor Who parody art by Amy Crook

Even though this is technically a holiday card design, I decided to leave the word bubbles off this original so it’s more of a lovely, grumpy portrait of Peter Capaldi’s twelfth Doctor. You can see the cute comic complete with words below. I copied his pose from the first publicity still they gave us of his costume, but used the universal gesture for “no touching” instead.

He is really not into hugging.

You can get these adorable cards on Etsy.

Their Eyes Met

Their Eyes Met, a Sherlock parody comic by Amy Crook

Their Eyes Met, a Sherlock parody comic by Amy Crook

Kim has been a wonderful customer on Etsy for a while, and she decided to take the leap and get me to draw her Sherlock ship for her, Lestrade and Molly. She wanted something funny with the two of them making eyes at each other over a corpse in the morgue, and we gave them each something to be pretending to look at before their eyes meet.

This is what she had to say about her commission:

I found the whole experience really positive and fun. Amy’s been really helpful and enthusiastic about the commission and kept in touch regularly to let me know how it was going. And seeing pics of it in progress has been great – watching it come to life on the paper!

Once my package arrived, I was so thrilled – I love the picture. I think she’s created and captured Molly and Lestrade just right for me. And the little extras in the envelople were wonderful, especially the unexpected and lovely line drawing of Greg tucked in with my art. I think he’s worth framing as well.

All in all, a brilliant and positive experience. And a lovely haul of goodies!

-Kim

Kim has also been kind enough to let me share the art with you, by putting this adorable card up in my shop. She’s pretty awesome, right?

Blankie, a Sherlock parody comic by Amy Crook

Blankie, a Sherlock parody comic by Amy Crook

This idea came up in conversation with yet another friend, so I suppose it’s sort of like a fourth sketch prompt. We both liked the idea of Sherlock gloomily buried in his duvet, refusing to come out until a good case comes along. I can only imagine John’s accompanying expression of total exasperation.

The original has been claimed, but you can send this as a card to that one friend that clearly needs to get out more.
