Reading Under a Tree by Amy Crook

Reading Under a Tree by Amy Crook

This is a little doodle I did thinking about one of my Works in Progress that’s kinda undecided about where I’m going with it. Right now it’s just a blue sky and some dark brown earth and nothing else, but I actually sort of like the effect all by itself. Still, I like this image with its loose lines and the arching tree over the studious figure.

I’ve always liked drawing trees, especially the leafless winter skeletons with all their intricate fractal shapes. It’s like jagged lace to see the bits of sky between the branches, the shadows reflecting inexact details warped by the ground’s topography.

Shrinky Dink Doodles

Shrinky Dink Doodles by Amy Crook

Shrinky Dink Doodles by Amy Crook

A while back I picked up something quite nostalgic, a Klutz Press book for doing Shrinky Dinks. If you don’t know what those are, it’s a clear-ish plastic sheet that you draw on, then cut out shapes, put it in the oven, and watch it shrink down to a much smaller size. A childhood staple for me!

I was thinking of doing up some little charms for Etsy or just for myself, and I doodled up these half-dozen images for tracing with a sharpie onto the plastic. Then I could color them with sharpie or colored pencil, cut them out, and cook them in my little toaster oven. I’m sure I’ll get around to using some of the shrinky dink material someday, if only to amuse myself.

Got a favorite?

Sandman by Amy Crook

Sandman by Amy Crook

I started reading The Sandman about 1/3 of the way through its run, and was instantly a fan. I collected them for a long time, and this is one of many doodles I’ve done of the titular character.

Belladonna

Belladonna by Amy Crook

Belladonna by Amy Crook

This is a messy little doodle of one of my kitties, Belladonna, as seen from behind. She likes to curl up in bed with me whenever I’m reading, writing or drawing, and so I took a few minutes to build up this sketch of her from behind. Her markings are actually a little less defined than the ones in the sketch, but I thought a little extra stripeyness added definition to what was otherwise the big furry blob of her body. Her tail kept twitching while I drew, I think she knew I was looking at her and wanted to be left to nap in peace.

Mermaid by Amy Crook

Mermaid by Amy Crook

I painted this piece a few years back when I was just learning how to use my watercolors, and trying to wean myself off the temptation to paint everything in pure pigments. She ended up with an abstract, stormy quality to her, the muted tones setting off the burst of glowing mystery in her hand. I imagine she’s out on a rock on a shoreline somewhere, drawing magic down from the clouds to sustain herself.

Fire Briar Rose

Fire Briar Rose by Amy Crook

Fire Briar Rose by Amy Crook

This is a doodle of a fictional construct, a flower with 7 petals, 7 leaves, and 7 thorns. The thorns and leaves make a spiral going up the stem, one opposite the other so they frame the flower perfectly when viewed from above. The rose itself has char-black edges on the petals, which turn red and then orange, the center of the flower glowing like hot coals. The whole plant is barely 3″ tall, growing in singular solitude on the floor of certain magical forests.

I don’t think that all of this got conveyed in the doodle, but there’s only so much one can do with pencil. Still, it helped to have something concrete to think about when I was working on the story that featured the fire briar rose.

Bonus Art: Drunk Octopus

Drunk Octopus by Drunk Amy

Drunk Octopus by Drunk Amy

I skipped my art on Saturday because I was out all day, and at one point I ended up having a couple of Tom Collins while waiting for Iron Man 2 to start. I was reminded at that time that I hadn’t done my Daily Art post that day, and I whipped the napkin out from under my drink to doodle up this in about a minute. I didn’t make it home in time to share it on Saturday, so, here it is, stuffed-in-purse wrinkles, cherry-stem stain and all!

Tom Collins, yum.
