SnowCthulhu by Amy Crook
It’s a snowman! It’s Cthulhu! It’s… SnowCthulhu!
Tiny, delicate pen work makes up the stick tentacles, arms and wings. This demanded careful, slightly messy watercolors to paint in the sticks and blue snowy shadows on him. His coal-black eyes have little hints of blue and purple in them just like real coal. Basically, he’s just awesome.
He may or may not become a holiday card this year, but he’ll definitely star in next year’s lineup. I was just feeling seasonal! And, you know, Lovecraftian. Because Christmas and unspeakable horrors just go together.

I know it’s a bit early for most people to be thinking about Valentines, but us handcrafters need extra time to get our swag together. I’m thinking of doing a line this year of “I love you like X loves Y” cards — some, like this one, of the dorky fangirl variety, and some of a more geeky bent.
Plus, the image of Mycroft smooching his DI under his favourite umbrella was one I just couldn’t resist.

Horizon bookmark

Horizon bookmark by Amy Crook
This little bookmark is a relative of my larger piece, On the Horizon. I’ve been field-testing it and actually the salt crystals are really there to stay. The salt pools are just shallow enough that they don’t scratch up the page or overly stuff the book, and the paper it’s on is a nice sturdy watercolor paper.

Bottom by Amy Crook, $69
Just a little experiment with pen and ink and watercolor that I think turned out rather well. I found someone’s Deviantart account full of reference photos and whipped this up in an afternoon, though I will admit having the hands, feet and face all hidden made it 1000% easier to draw. And the view while I was working was quite lovely, heh.

Another little commission, this time for someone who really enjoyed my 6-page comic, Resplendent Ennui. She wanted a domestic scene with John poking out his tongue while he ate crisps, and I couldn’t resist adding in some extra details. Sherlock likes his tea light and sweet, so he’s got an Erlenmeyer flask of milk and a tipped-over beaker of sugar to go with his tea. John’s drinking his black out of his RAMC mug — I’m pretty sure Sherlock is “borrowing” Mrs. Hudson’s teacup and pot there.

Raindrops Falling

Raindrops Falling by Amy Crook, $222
I made the irregular lines of salt pools with the intention of doing something with vertical lines of pen and ink, and then once I looked at the piece it just really wanted paint instead. I used pure Ultramarine Turquoise to create the streaky lines, and the whole thing reminds me of watching a really strong rain storm through a window, a few drops close enough to watch and the rest making the world a blur.

I have been ridiculously busy this week and don’t have proper detail or framed photos, but by now I expect you know what sort of plain black frames I use. Here’s a close-up of the lower right corner, so you can see the salt crystals that have grown off the edge of the paper, and the way the paint caught on the bigger salt crystals.

Kitties Visit Baker St.

Kitties Visit Baker St. cartoon by Amy Crook
This little commission was done for a request of John & Sherlock playing with my kitties, so Belladonna (left) and Pteropodidae (right) go to take a little trip to Baker Street. Bella’s fully recovered from her tooth drama, and has found John a comfy, warm place to look annoyed about being petted. Sherlock has, predictably, decided to experiment with Pod and a laser pointer (he also refuses to call Pod by anything other than his full name).
All in all it was fun do draw cartoon versions of my kitties, and of course I always enjoy John & Sherlock.
