Coloring Book Doodles

Sunday, November 28th, 2010

For most of the buyers of my Cthulhu Coloring Book, I’ve had time to put a little 5-minute sketch in the inside front covers. I remembered to scan most of the doodles before mailing them, so here they are for your to enjoy!

Zombie Koi

Zombie Koi by Amy Crook

Zombie Koi by Amy Crook

This cheerful undead fish is just looking for a few scraps of brains left for him — zombies are notoriously sloppy eaters, after all. He’s on the back cover of my Cthluhu Coloring Book (one of the bonus zombies!), and was one I was most looking forward to coloring myself. His tattered flesh glows an eerie green, but his attractive orange-and-white spots still show through in places.

Weeble Wednesday: Yog-Sothoth

Weeble Yog-Sothoth by Amy Crook

Weeble Yog-Sothoth by Amy Crook

If you’re feeling a bit short of time this holiday week, perhaps Yog-Sothoth could help you out — or make it all so much worse. Yog-Sothoth is an Outer God of the Lovecraft mythos, and yet another of the oddling creatures in my Cthulhu Coloring Book. Yog-Sothoth was named The Lurker at the Threshold by Lovecraft, and is considered to be both at one with all of time and space, and outside of it.

My interpretation of his form as “great globes of light” is a bit whimsical, so I decided to use actual watercolor to experiment with his coloring, and had fun working wet-in-wet to get some rather psychedelic effects.

Yog-Sothoth, 5″x7″ pen and ink and watercolor on watercolor paper, $79 with free shipping.

Remember, Forget

Remember, Forget by Amy Crook

Remember, Forget by Amy Crook

Once again I was struck with a phrase in the middle of insomnia though this one isn’t a quote that I know of. I wrote it up on my white board and it lurked there for a few weeks until I had a chance to try it out with the same pen-and-watercolor technique as I used for A Circle in Time. I deliberately let the watercolor pool down at the bottom of the page so that it was still damp when I wrote the second line, but dry up top so the first line is clear.

“i teach myself to remember
i teach myself to forget”

As a child, I was often faced with a dire lack of new books to read, so I taught myself to forget the details and endings of books so there was still a sense of adventure when I read them over again later. I often keep whole worlds of detail in my head about other things, however, though the older I get, the less I’m able to stuff new information in without losing track of some of what was already there.

Remember, Forget, 5″x5″ watercolor with pen and ink, $99 with free shipping.

Squid with Mittens

Squid with Mittens by Amy Crook

Squid with Mittens by Amy Crook

This happy little guy is just trying to keep warm. Someone knit him a lovely set of mittens for all his tentacles, and a matching hat. I decided that, since they don’t really have thumbs, squid mittens should just be called squittens. Also, it’s really fun to say.

You can get him or any of my other squid greeting cards at Etsy, or buy his original with the button above.

Faith II

Faith II by Amy Crook

Faith II by Amy Crook

This is the match to Faith I, this time with extra details done in rich primary colours. The blue cruciform figure floats in its own smaller field, while the close-up reveals the morbidity of the everyday image of faith. In addition to the rich blue there’s a subtle gold halo around the figure, done with color this time instead of scratching away.

There’s a lot to think about from this starting point, and a lot to be said, but it’s all difficult to approach without offending someone. Art can often open a dialogue where words fail, though there’s still a conversation to follow up, whether in words or images.

Weeble Wednesday: Zombie Jesus

Zombie Jesus by Amy Crook

Zombie Jesus by Amy Crook

A certain blonde chicken challenged me to make a cute zombie Jesus card for Christmas, and who am I to resist her?

He’s meant in the spirit of fun, so his card says, “Eat of my flesh and I’ll snack on your brains,” inside.

You can pick up any of my greeting cards at Etsy, or take home his original art below.
