Cartoon! Wendy & Me

Today’s art is another cartoon, this time of me and Wendy Cholbi, tech mermaid. Wendy wanted to expand her WordPress Installation offerings to include a package with some design included, and so I drew up this image to go with our bios on the sales page. It was fun not only to make Wendy into a mermaid, but to give my hair a bit of extra color (in real life that color would be so hard to maintain!) as well as the bunny ears, and a couple of t-shirts from ThinkGeek that neither of us actually owns — yet.
We’re also doing a free Website Color Clinic call on Wednesday to help people pick their own web palettes. Come join us and listen to me babble nervously about color!

Green Sea Turtle

Green Sea Turtle by Amy Crook
A few months back I held a contest on the Not Dead Yet Studios blog to give away one Cartoon, and one custom tiny painting. The very patient CaZ from 2 Chicks at Home won the painting, and it’s finally done.
She asked for a green sea turtle (which I was surprised to find after some Googling wasn’t particularly green), and so I went looking for reference photos and got started. Rather than using one of the tiny 2.75″ square canvases, I decided to go with a slightly larger canvas board to give the little guy some room to swim.
As soon as he’s dry enough, he’ll get packed up and shipped off to his new home. He was fun to paint, and I’m thinking perhaps I need to do another contest soon — though maybe this time for an existing work.

Mermaid

I painted this piece a few years back when I was just learning how to use my watercolors, and trying to wean myself off the temptation to paint everything in pure pigments. She ended up with an abstract, stormy quality to her, the muted tones setting off the burst of glowing mystery in her hand. I imagine she’s out on a rock on a shoreline somewhere, drawing magic down from the clouds to sustain herself.

Bonus Art: Drunk Octopus

I skipped my art on Saturday because I was out all day, and at one point I ended up having a couple of Tom Collins while waiting for Iron Man 2 to start. I was reminded at that time that I hadn’t done my Daily Art post that day, and I whipped the napkin out from under my drink to doodle up this in about a minute. I didn’t make it home in time to share it on Saturday, so, here it is, stuffed-in-purse wrinkles, cherry-stem stain and all!

Commission: Mermaid

In the fall of 2008, my friend Jeff commissioned me to paint a gift for his wife, for a combination 5th anniversary and Christmas present. It was an interesting challenge keeping it a secret for two months, but the moment of presentation was a smashing success!
We wanted to take into account as many of her favorite things as possible, so not only does it have the mermaid as a central theme, we added in the sunken pirate ship, and of course a shark or two.

Consolation Squid

Consolation Squid
During the long process of getting Nugget painted, Gretchen managed to break her arm riding her bike. I actually got to see her at a convention that summer while she was still en-casted, and since the kind concom provided a table of markers for its attendees to decorate Ducks (the con mascot), I decided to give Gretchen a consolation Squid.
We almost colored the whole thing in the pink glitter pen, but it really didn’t want to stick to the cast material, so he ended up with glitter highlights instead. The eyes were gold glitter pen (of course), and the rest is good old Sharpie marker.
Like all cast art, the Consolation Squid was ephemeral, but I thought I’d take a break from the for-sale pile and share him with you today.
