Fairytale Sky Bookmark by Amy Crook
It’s Bookmark Week once again! We’re starting out with a lovely new moon for Monday, which happens to already have found a home. If you were on my email list, you, too, would have had a chance to snag the bookmark of your choice ahead of everyone else.
I’ll have one more Bookmark Week in November so there’s still time to pick up a stocking stuffer for the holidays, though they will of course be more Amy-themed than holiday-themed. I already have two of the new set done, in fact!

M is for Majuscule and Miniscule

M is for Majuscule & Miniscule, calligraphic illumination by Amy Crook
I like to think of the little m as snuggling up to the big M, miniscule trustingly at the feet of the majuscule. The background on this one seems simple, but the crosshatching like that is always quite time-consuming, especially with a glitter gel pen.
M is for Majuscule & Miniscule, 5″x5″ mixed media on paper, nfs (sold). If you’d like an M of your own, you can find out how to commission one here.

Above, you can see the green pen shining against the soft periwinkle blue background, with the rich purple and green of the two Ms surrounded by glitter. Below, a shot of the background in progress, to see the way the texture really changed the whole look of the piece.

Santa Hats Are Cool, Doctor Who parody art by Amy Crook
The eleventh Doctor is very proud of his new headgear. Let’s hope this one survives more than five minutes before getting destroyed.
Santa Hats Are Cool, 5″x7″ pen & ink and Copic markers on paper, nfs (sold).
You can still get him on a holiday card at my Etsy shop.

The Stars Are Right 6

The Stars Are Right 6 by Amy Crook
The brain-pink planet has deep red fissures in its surface, and radiates a subtle evil message of Cthulhu’s advent. The stars are most definitely right for anyone unfortunate enough to get too close.

Above, you can see a close up of the sliver stars shining out amongst the glittering purple runes, with the planet hovering malevolently in the background. Below, the piece is sitting with deceptive restfulness in a frame, just waiting to invade your home and your mind.

L is for Layers, calligraphic illumination by Amy Crook
One of the things I love about this series is the physicality of it, the way the glitter encourages the viewer to try to catch the light, to pick the piece up and move it around. In this one, I went a step farther and added a physical dimension to it by building up layers of cut and painted paper. The gold at the edges helps each layer stand out, even more than just the cascading autumnal colors.

Tentacle Spiral 4

Tentacle Spiral 4 by Amy Crook
Every time I do a new piece to this series, I get confused about whether it’s Tentacle Spiral or Tentacle Spirals. For the record, there’s no s on the end, just to be extra confusing.
This one’s clearly influenced by my watching ofA Nightmare Before Christmas this week (twice). The tentacles spiral in from all sides to obscure the golden harvest moon. I went and carried the black paint out over the black paper so there was better continuity between it and the tentacles, which makes it extra velvety-dark in the background portions.

Above, you can see the delicate curls of black coming to obscure the yellow moon. Below, the piece is lurking in a frame to show you the size, just perfect for a desk or that little bit of wall in that one hallway that’s too small for anything else. You know the one I mean.
