Tentacle Bookmark 3

I’m afraid this lovely green tentacle is already sold! If you were on my monthly newsletter list, you, too would have gotten a chance to call dibs on this week’s bookmarks.
I started with this bright yellow wash that fades from perfectly opaque to nothing at all thanks to my nifty water brushes, and then added in apple-green Sharpie marker designs for the tentacle. Remarkably cheerful for an ancient horror!

Above you can really see how the cool yellow interacts with the warm cream of the paper, and the intense green of the marker. Below, it’s looking quite bright next to the deep dark blue of my book.

Bubbling Bookmark

It’s Bookmark Week all over again! There are only two bookmarks left from the previous offerings, and one of this week’s is already spoken for — the artist is not responsible for dawdlers missing out on the one they liked and having to buy a larger, normally-priced original instead to assuage their disappointment. I’m totally okay with that, come to think of it.
There’s only one of each of these tiny originals, though obviously I sometimes do them in series within the series. Very meta.
Today’s bookmark is not part of a series, but reminds me of water boiling in a dark blue-black cast-iron cauldron. Snape would no doubt approve.

Why Bookmarks?

I asked one of my darling patrons what I should post about today, and he asked me a really easy question: Why bookmarks?
I’m sure he was expecting some deep answer about my love of books or the utility of art, but in all honesty, it’s really simple. I often have little strips of paper left when I’m tearing or cutting down larger sheets. Since I’m a total art supply hoarder, I’ve kept some around (and more since I started doing Bookmark Weeks), and one day when I was on the phone for something, I pulled one out and started doodling on it. It’s a fun way to mess around on a small scale with lowered expectations. I sell the results for a relatively low price, so that way people who can’t afford one of my regular paintings or drawings can still have a wee Amy original.
Plus, now I feel all virtuous when I save weird little scraps of paper.
For the curious, I’ve got 4 new ones done, so there’s only 3 more to go before I can slack off real posts and do another Bookmark Week for your enjoyment. If you’re on Twitter, keep an eye out for a preview tweet one of these Sundays — I ended up pre-selling a couple of them before the posts even went up last time. There’s only two left out of the previous lots, some tentacles and the very first one I ever posted.

Squiggle Bookmark

And here we have the perfect bookmark for sketch Sunday, or, ridiculous squiggles like I used to draw on all my notes back in school (you know, when the dinosaurs roamed the earth). I used one of those incredibly silly gel pens with the ink that changes color, and you can see the variations in the color from a bright blue at the top through midnight and ending up a distinct violet shade.
I’m pretty sure I did this whole thing over the course of two conference calls, but yes, it took just as long as you think it did. While I find this sort of pattern makes for a good “fake embroidery” on collars and cuffs in drawings, I don’t think I’ll ever use it for anything quite this big again. Too much squiggling!

I’ve optimistically numbered this 1, assuming I’ll get the urge to do more Doctor Who bookmarks in the future. The Eleventh Doctor is contemplating his lot with his TARDIS parked a bit precariously on a hill, and not liking his options at the moment. But don’t worry, he’ll figure some way out.
He’s the Doctor. It’s what he does.

Salt Bookmark 4

Salt Bookmark 4

The second smallest bookmark for your Friday viewing, this one’s a little shorter but wide enough to win the by a nose on total surface area. (What? You knew I was a nerd.)
This one echoes the flaked-off salt textures in Blue Planet 4, but in miniature, with the smallest pools keeping all of their paint and only the larger four pulling away to show the iridescent green beneath. I gave this one a meticulous background of blue lines radiating outward without ever quite intersecting thanks to the stopping points I snuck in at the start.

Above, you can see the textures of salt and paint, ink and paper, and how they all interact on a tiny level (given that the bookmark is barely and inch wide). Below, it’s snuggled up with a book for size perspective, though I’m not sure I’d want to risk leaving blue powder in my books by actually using this one for reading.

Jellyfish Bookmark 2

More tentacles for Thursday! This bookmark is extra thick, drawn on black mat board rather than the paper I usually use. I drew a rainbow of jellyfish on here, and saved the gold for mysterious floating motes of something in the black depths.
This is the smallest of this week’s offerings, though the paper’s quite thick, making it a very solid little piece of art.
