The Stars Are Right 2 by Amy Crook

The Stars Are Right 2 by Amy Crook

I went to a whole bunch of galleries a while ago, and one of them had these great pieces in them that looked like decaying pages of ancient texts, written in incomprehensible languages. My brain, of course, immediately went to the Cthulhu Mythos, and I thought how cool would it be to put the strange text in the stars instead. I put lines around my salt constellation to show how right the stars have become, and wended the alien language through and around both the planet and constellation. I think perhaps this is how the world would look if Cthulhu did rise above the waves, a single mass of green-slimed water dotted with the cities of the dead.

Above you can see a close-up of the salt crystals on the planet, their quieter glimmer outshone by the silver glitter of the strange ancient language. Below, the fateful constellation nestles among the incomprehensible words, spelling out doom for those who know how to read the stars.

And finally you can see the piece in its frame. Although it’s very different than the original The Stars Are Right from last year, I felt like the name was just too obvious to ignore.

Flying Polyp sketch by Amy Crook

This is a completely ridiculous sketch of a totally bizarre monster from Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos.

That guy had issues, man. Issues.

Happy Sunday!

Mother Hydra Weds Father Dagon

Mother Hydra Weds Father Dagon, cartoon by Amy Crook

When I was done coloring this and Monday’s zombies, I realized that I’d managed to do only 2 drawings, but color 4 figures with 7 heads between them. Whew!

This one was also done specifically to be a card, this time to bring a little Cthulhu to your wedding season. Dagon is the big bad from Shadows Over Innsmouth, and while Lovecraft’s Hydra doesn’t get a lot of description, it was easy to adapt the classic many-headed monster of myth to this purpose. I especially enjoy the boutonniere pinned straight to Dagon’s chest.

Yeah, I’m a little morbid.

Mother Hydra

I’ve taken some liberties here and used a more classic interpretation of a hydra, rather than the Lovecraftian description of Father Dagon’s bride. There’s just no way to make a vast pool of screaming faces cute, really.

As it is, I can totally imagine at least one of her heads yelling, “No more wire hangers!” She’s even got pearls and lovely pink-painted claws nails.

Just don’t mention the screaming faces and monstrous claws pressing against her heavy, pregnant belly. Or think about what sort of monsters she’s the mother of, if you want to sleep tonight.

Cthulhu Dreams of Love by Amy Crook

Cthulhu Dreams of Love by Amy Crook

Cthulhu gets a Valentine! Of course his love-dreams could be for a birthday, anniversary or just because, but it’s that season and I drew him with that in mind.

That said, my favorite part is the button-eyed Hound of Tindalos plush toy. He’s holding its paw! Aww, Cthulhu, we never knew you were such a softie.

Another little Coloring Book doodle! Cthulhu is quite dubious that he’s not supposed to eat the kitten, but I’m sure he’ll come around.

Happy New Year!
