Alternate Universes: Vampire/Werewolf, parody Sherlock comic by Amy Crook

Halloween is the season for dressing up as things you aren’t, and I have a 6-panel Sherlock comic to celebrate. One of my favorite patrons commissioned these comics to celebrate some of the alternate universes that the Sherlock characters get thrust into in fic and art.

This first one is fairly self-explanatory, a supernatural AU where Sherlock Holmes, pale and skinny as he is, is a fashionable vampire, and the more earthy John Watson is a werewolf. Of course, there’s every variation to be found out there, with John as the vampire or both of them werewolves or one of them really a banshee or a ghost, but this configuration is the stereotypical arrangement of species.

Alternate Universes: Vampire/Werewolf, 7″x5″ pen & ink, Copic marker, and silver paint on paper.

Each panel is colored with its own scheme, and this one (as you can see) is red. You can get a preview of the whole thing below.

5 Sherlock bookmarks, commission art by Amy Crook

5 Sherlock bookmarks, commission art by Amy Crook

Yay, more Sherlock bookmarks! I did these as tests for the elaborately colored 6-panel comic (and print!) I’m posting next week, as part of a commission for one of my darling patrons. Some of them reflect the comics and some not so much, but they were all a test for our rainbow color scheme.

What, you say, you didn’t know I did commission bookmarks? Well, I do now! You might be asking yourself how these are different than regular fan art commissions, and so I’ll tell you, because I’m nice that way.

  • They’re $15 each, flat, no matter what’s on them.
  • You tell me what you want, I draw and send. No sketches, no previews.
  • Color vs black and white is up to my discretion.
  • It’ll be on whatever bookmark-like scrap of paper I have to hand.
  • This applies to fan art comics only, no portraits or watercolors or any of that fancy jazz.
  • They tend to be a lot faster than a regular commission.
  • Email me if you want one! (Okay, that’s the same.)

The ones above are all on drawing paper scraps rather than thicker watercolor paper or cardstock, but I know the recipient (hi!) won’t be using them to mark books. If you’re a framer vs a book marker, that’s something to let me know during the email.

Mycroft’s Minions

It’s more Minions! Am I the only one who sees these wee pill-shaped dudes and thinks of that old Naprosyn slogan, “Little. Yellow. Different.”?

After pondering the idea of crossing Despicable Me over with some of my favorite fandoms, I couldn’t resist the idea of Mycroft having actual Minions with his own little M logo on their overalls and everything. And then, when trying to figure out a scenario that would be fun to draw, I couldn’t help but imagine Mycroft in my favorite scene from the first movie, down on one knee smooching the Minions goodnight one by one.

This is another one of those ideas that had to be a card, but isn’t really for any occasion specifically, just to put a smile on someone’s face. Unless you know someone who’s actually got Minions, in which case it’s kind of a sympathy card.

Banana?

And here’s the third of my trio of Sherlock thank you cards! I’ll sell them as a set of three once I have time to take some more photos, but for now just enjoy Sherlock’s pouty little face and John’s expression of wicked delight to get one over on him. It must be especially satisfying to be able to hold something up out of Sherlock’s reach for once, too.

Giant Rats 2: Murder? Good.

Three! Three whole pages inked, ah-ah-ah-aaah. I’m going to try to keep up some sort of useful pace with this project so that someday I might actually get the whole book done and able to be printed in one way or another. After Sherlock’s gratuitous snottiness in the first one, John’s very pleased to see Lestrade’s face and have the prospect of a case to keep Sherlock amused.

In keeping with the tradition, above you can see the painstaking pattern on Sherlock’s chair, as well as John’s welcoming smile for Lestrade. Below, you can see the piece in a frame, though it will have a long wait before it can go visit anyone at home. Also, a gratuitous hedgehog.

Another Saturday, another card! I decided I needed a trio of Sherlock thank-you cards, so you’ll see another next week just to round out the set. This time it’s John who’s rather begrudging the social niceties, which means it’s probably all Sherlock’s fault, somehow.

Above, you can see a close-up of the rather detailed cables on John’s sweater, and his grumpy pose. Below, you can see it in a frame, hanging out with a skull, a hedgehog, and my iPhone. And you thought you kept weird company.

PS – If it ever frustrates you that certain sorts of fan art are always sold when they go up, you can always commission your own.

Giant Rats 1: Blogging Again?

Ages ago, I started a little project combining the worlds of Sherlock with Edward Gorey and my own twisted mind, and I’ve finally gotten back to it! I scripted a 20-page story based incredibly loosely on the offhand mention in one of the original stories of the giant rats of Sumatra, and I have page 1 here for you. Page 2 is sketched, and hopefully this will start the ball rolling a little faster. I’d like to eventually publish them into a little book, which means that there’ll be front and back art, as well, but I think getting more than 2 pages done is the next step.

These pages aren’t for sale yet, because if I do make a book, I’ll try to use Kickstarter to fund it, in which case they’ll be a premium reward level.
