Arses not Artses, watercolor sketch by Amy Crook

Arses not Artses, watercolor sketch by Amy Crook

I was texting my friend Jeff and I made a typo — I intended to say I was going to “make some artses” (aka make some art), and I managed to leave out the t. Being a fan of certain British books and TV shows as I am, I immediately said that I couldn’t guarantee whether or not there would be arses.

I was testing out my very cool new Lunar Black watercolor, and I had some left on my palette from the art you’ll get to see next week, so I decided to pull out my sketchbook and draw this so I’d have at least one arse to show for the session. The paper wrinkled and the paint ran and granulated, so I supplemented it with a little bit of pen and ink work, including the signature, dipping the fountain pen right into the watery puddles of paint still on the page.

I cheated and photoshopped out the buckled paper, but you can see places the paint pooled more thickly. I do love the granulated textures the lunar black leaves, and painting bums, so perhaps I’ll try again on a thicker paper.

Update: Cthulhu Divination Deck WIP

Cthulhu Divination Deck, Card Mockup by Amy Crook

Cthulhu Divination Deck, Card Mockup by Amy Crook

Progress is moving forward on my idea for a Cthulhu Divination Deck! I decided on a card size, a deck size, and got some price quotes. I’m planning to add some ornamentation to the card frame (and possibly change the layout a little), but this is the basic idea. So far I’ve decided that card #1 needs to be Cthulhu himself, and #42 (the last one) will be “The Stars are Right.” Now I just have 40 more cards to decide on. Then I’ll sketch out the art double the size it will be on the original cards, ink and color each piece, and somewhere in there I’ll put together stuff for the Kickstarter.

Rude Goblins (with tiny wangs), sketch by Amy Crook

Rude Goblins, sketch by Amy Crook

I’m not sure what I had in mind when I sat down and started sketching, but I’ve managed to really amuse myself with these two guys. The very first line I drew was the round, fat curve of the short one’s pot belly, and I spent a ridiculous amount of time refining them before I decided it was time to declare them done.

And no, I have no idea what happened to their pants. And they’re not going to tell you, either.

Crow Sketch

Crow sketch by Amy Crook

Crow sketch by Amy Crook

Finally had some time to sketch for Saturday, and I decided to draw a black bird of some sort. I say that because of course, despite the fact that Pod spends hours every day staring hungrily out the window, pretending in his head that our local flock of crows wouldn’t make carrion out of him were the barriers between them removed, I couldn’t be bothered to get up and go look at one when I was doodling this. So, I’m calling it a crow, but if crows have special beak things or different wings, I’m… really okay with that, actually.

Hope you all have just as relaxed a weekend as I was with my sketchbook!

3 Squid and a Mouse, sketches by Amy Crook

3 Squid and a Mouse, sketches by Amy Crook

I was considering squid for a painting I eventually left abstract, but these guys got doodled up while I was contemplating how to add the squid in without disrupting the flow of the piece. It’s also part of my tiny emerging practice of doing some sketching in pen, without the crutch of my eraser

3 Squid and a Mouse, pen and ink on scratch paper, not for sale.

Deplorable Figurine

Deplorable Figurine, sketch by Amy Crook

Deplorable Figurine by Amy Crook

This morbid little doll started as a midnight sketch, just a few loose lines and the name scrawled on the page. It took me a few weeks to get back and fill in her tiny hands, stitched-together body, and the extra-creepy details on her face. Though I never went quite this far, I totally used to draw elaborate eyeliner designs on myself when I was an earnest young Goth. Ah, the olden days, when I gave a crap enough to wear makeup.

Deplorable Figurine, 5.5″x8.5″ pencil on sketch paper, not for sale.

The Fool sketch

The Fool sketch by Amy Crook

The Fool sketch by Amy Crook

Ages ago, a friend of mine was getting his artist friends to draw/paint interpretations of the Fool tarot card. I painted a background on a little 3×5 piece of canvas board, and then forgot all about finishing it for one reason or another. The other day I pulled out the old background and was contemplating adding in a figure properly. When I decided to sketch it out, I was amused to find that what came to mind was the iPod-wearing, oblivious hipster you see above.
