Deep Ultraviolet

Friday, April 6th, 2018

watercolor painting of tentacles, baby octopuses, and jellyfish on a deep violet backgroudn by Amy Crook

Deep Ultraviolet, 12″x6″ watercolor and white ink on Fluid watercolor paper

In the violet depths of some mysterious sea, light filters down to find shining octopuses, waving tentacle fronds, and frolicking jellyfish.

Ultraviolet is the Pantone color of the year, and somehow the word seemed to fit this mix of vivid purples and shining metallics. There’s a sense of more going on than the eye can see, life just around the corner of vision.

What lies deep in these oceans?

Bees 4

Wednesday, April 4th, 2018

a loose brush painting of a bee on a background of honey-gold splotches, watercolor by Amy Crook

Bees 4, 6″x4″ watercolor on Fluid watercolor paper

This fat, fuzzy bumblebee is just waiting to bring some sparkly spring into your life!

She’s chilling in this honey-gold world, dusted with glittering pollen and waiting to go out and gather for her queen and hive. She’s covered in fluff that’s perfect for getting the most pollen possible, so make sure to provide plenty of flowers known to help feed the bees.

What season gets you abuzz with joy?

Vestiges

Vestiges, a watercolor painting in bright blues and turquoise of alien underwater ruins, by Amy Crook

Vestiges, 8″x4″ watercolor and white ink on Fluid watercolor paper

A vivid ultramarine blue ocean, with hints of purple and turquoise both. This ocean is alien and strange, with the many-eyed whale floating along in the background, and the shattered remains of some long-lost civilization in the fore.

Whatever was once here, the vestiges that were left have their own kind of beauty.

Shiny Dragonair

Tuesday, March 27th, 2018

a shiny pink Dragonair flying about a normal blue Dragonair, Pokemon fan art by Amy Crook

Shiny Dragonair, 7″x5″ pen & ink and Copic marker on paper

Another rare alternate color scheme Pokemon commission for Sekrit Patron! This time we went for double the loveliness of this pretty dragon type with the normal blue and “shiny” pink twined together in draconic curiosity, if not love.

Want a commission of your own? Email me and I’ll get you in the queue!

Shiny Rowlet

Tuesday, March 20th, 2018

a drawing of the Pokemon Rowlet in its Shiny color scheme, flying and looking happy

Shiny Rowlet, 7″x5″ pen & ink and Copic marker on paper

Another shiny Pokemon! This guy is also a commission, of course — I’m finally getting the hang of drawing them in a dynamic manner, especially after Umbreon last month. The “shiny” refers to a color change, this one’s normally brown and leaf green, but he’s looking pretty spiffing here in his alternate palette.

For the fellow nerds out there, I finally got my first shiny on Dratini Day, mainly because they were everywhere — I ended up with six!

Me Three

Me Three, watercolor horizon by Amy Crook

Me Three, 8″x4″ watercolor on Fluid watercolor paper

A horizon at the edge of day and night. Twisted skeletons of winter trees. Birds flying in the background.

It’s a bit on the nose to call this typical example of my oeuvre “Me Three,” but sometimes the titles pick you.

The sky is a beautiful clear blue shading to the gold of sunrise, and the clouds float above with a mix of golden light and purple shadows. Trees full of character show just a touch of texture in the gleam of morning. A trio of long-necked birds make their way through the morning air.
