Cat Naps

Cat Naps by Amy Crook

Cat Naps by Amy Crook

Cats! Lazy, languid, liquid cats. I first explored this idea in a sketchy little bookmark, but of course with only room for three poses it wasn’t nearly enough.

I took inspiration from my own ridiculous pets, Belladonna and Pod, and of course the many cats on the internet.

I have trouble choosing a favorite — what’s yours?

Above, you can see a close up of the fine brush work on this sleeping kitty, rich with texture despite the minimalist design. Below, you can see the piece in a frame, just waiting to add some extra kitty zen to your life.

Songbird

Songbird by Amy Crook

Songbird by Amy Crook

My mother admired Jo’s Raptor, and so I decided to paint her a songbird of her own for Mother’s Day. This brush-and-ink style is always an interesting challenge in balancing detail versus simplicity. This little guy is just waiting for his chance to break out in song to herald the long-awaited return of spring.

The original is already in its new home, but you can buy him on a blank card at Etsy.

Sunday Round-Up & Face Sketch

a lot of cartoons and some skulls, like I do

a lot of cartoons and some skulls, like I do

A cheery assortment of smiles and tentacles in this week’s art, starting with Bilbo having tea on Monday. Tuesday brought Doctor Who, and Thursday was a whole wallpaper pattern made of grinning skulls. Friday there was a very cute gift of squid, and on Saturday a pair of adorable squid tied the knot.

And, of course, I have a wee sketch for you! This face came out very narrow indeed, and decidedly skewed to one side, but I rather like him anyway. I really do need to get some new large brush pens, though, mine are both starting to dry up, alas, either that or just work with brush & ink and skip the pen bit entirely.

Sunday Round-Up & Branch Sketch

skulls and fishies and 'toons, oh, my!

skulls and fishies and ‘toons, oh, my!

Another week of art has gone by like a flash! Monday I gave you whimsical skulls, and Tuesday a spooky fish skeleton. Wednesday we revisited the ocean depths with sea creatures galore. Thursday we got a dwarf’s view of birthdays, and Friday brought us Sherlock’s views on the subject. Saturday Sherlock was very grumpy indeed — he did not enjoy the party, apparently.

Below, we have a little brush-pen sketch of the tree outside my window, which just got a nice trim to clear away the dead branches and give Pod a better view of the crows that visit him.

Zen Teapot

Zen Teapot, brush drawing by Amy Crook

Zen Teapot, brush drawing by Amy Crook, $59

I love the specific shape of the round bodies of certain teapots. This one isn’t perfect by any means, but the imperfection adds to its beauty to me. Despite a part of me that is all about the perfectionism, I really do dig wabi sabi and the beauty in flawed, damaged or wonky things.

Zen Teapot, 7″x5″ brush pen on paper, $59 with free shipping.

I really like how peaceful this one looks in a frame, like it would fit pretty much anywhere and just make you feel that much more Zen about life.
